That this House recognises the valuable work of FareShare, the UK’s biggest charity fighting hunger and food waste, in providing two million meals per week to people in need during the covid-19 pandemic; acknowledges that it is deeply regrettable that two million tonnes of food goes to waste in the UK every year, as well as noting that food waste has a significant negative environmental impact, which can be mitigated by FareShare’s work with British farmers and the food industry to divert waste food to people’s plates through their Surplus With Purpose scheme; and encourages the Government to continue to support FareShare in that endeavour.

That this House expresses concern at the scale of international wildlife trafficking, which is estimated to be worth in the region of £6 to £8 billion a year and growing; is alarmed by the impact of this trade on endangered species including elephants, rhinoceroses and tigers; recognises that Interpol has concluded that a significant proportion of wildlife crime is carried out by organised criminal networks and that wildlife crime often occurs hand in hand with other serious crime including money laundering, corruption and murder; welcomes the leadership of former US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on this issue, who said in November 2012 that protecting wildlife is a national security issue, a public health issue, and an economic security issue critical to each and every country; acknowledges the efforts made by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on this issue; and calls on other Government departments including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department for International Development, the Home Department and the Ministry of Defence to take a more active interest in this issue so that the UK takes a lead internationally in tackling this crime.

That this House notes that Animals Asia has been working with the Vietnamese government to end the practice of bear bile farming in Vietnam since 2005; further notes that the Animals Asia Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre located in Tam Dao National Park, which houses 104 rescued bears, is under threat of closure due to the land beingdeclared of national defence significance; further notes that this claim is questionable, given that the rescue centre has been in operation since 2005, and that the area in which it is located has been used for tourism and other private purposes since the park opened in 1996; observes that this eviction would lead to further welfare problems for the rescued bears, the loss of local jobs and a financial loss to the local economy; and calls on the UK Government to raise this matter with the Vietnamese Prime Minister with the aim of ensuring that the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre remains in Tam Dao National Park and that Animals Asiais allowed to continueits vital rehabilitation and education work in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

That this House recognises that elephants in Africa and Asia are facing a severe and growing threat; highlights with grave concern the hundreds of elephants massacred in Cameroon earlier this year and notes that ivory seizures in 2011 reached record highs; welcomes the Coalition Agreement commitment to press for a ban on ivory sales and encourages greater resources to be made available to combat the illegal ivory trade both in the UK and abroad; further highlights with grave concern the decline in the Asian elephant population by up to 90 per cent in the last 100 years, particularly due to extensive loss of habitat, a threat which remains unaddressed on an international level; notes with concern the illegal trade in live elephants in Asia for the tourist and entertainment industries; further welcomes the Government's support for the African Elephant Action Plan and calls on the Government to support the development of an Asian Elephant Action Plan; and encourages the Government to take a lead in protecting elephants internationally.
