That this House regrets the decision of BBC South East to replace their well-known presenters Beverley Thompson and Geoff Clark; notes that they are hugely popular with viewers in the region and highly respected for their experienced and reliable brand of journalism; hopes that there is no truth in the rumours that the decision was related in any way to their age; and calls on the BBC to reconsider the decision.

That this House calls on Post Office Ltd to reconsider the proposed closure of the Willingdon Village, Wannock, Marine Parade, Broadway and Etchingham Road post offices used by residents in Eastbourne constituency; recognises that post offices are a vital part of the local communities which they serve and that such closures cause disproportionate hardship to older members of these communities; and further recognises that such closures would cause inconvenience and difficulties to all those who regularly use these post offices.

That this House expresses its deep concern about the continued distress of all those affected by the loss of their occupational pensions on wind-up; notes the reports from both the Parliamentary Ombudsman and the Public Administration Select Committee which identify the need for the Government to take the lead in putting together an effective rescue package, as well as the judgment of the High Court; is concerned that the measures introduced so far have been unacceptably slow to deliver relief to the intended beneficiaries and are heavily constrained by the limits on the level of funding available; and therefore calls on the Government to reconsider its opposition and introduce as a matter of urgency a Lifeboat Fund which will combine non-taxpayer sources of additional funding, such as unclaimed financial assets, with taxpayer-funded sources already committed, so as to deliver a more generous and expeditious package of help to those devastated by occupational scheme failures than that available under the failing Financial Assistance Scheme, thus helping to restore trust and confidence in the entire pension system.

That this House congratulates Eastbourne resident Mr Henry Allingham on his 110th birthday; marks with respect his long years of active life, especially his service on the Western Front and in the Battle of Jutland during the First World War; considers him a splendid example of the courage, devotion to service and humility of his generation; and wishes him many more happy years.

That this House notes with concern that the figure for delayed transfers of care in the East Sussex Hospitals Trust is running at nearly 100 beds or 9 per cent. of the total beds available; further notes that this problem is the worst in the whole NHS and has led to cancelled operations and patients being turned away from Accident and Emergency; further notes that the Trust is required to make cuts of ??17 million this year; and calls on the Secretary of State for Health to review urgently the level of Government funding for both health and social services in East Sussex, and in particular to ensure that funding adequately reflects the fact that the county has the highest proportion of over-85 year olds in the country.

That this House expresses concern at the decision by Meridian Television to move broadcasting news from Maidstone; believes that relocating the news studio to Southampton could dilute the quality of news coverage in Sussex; and calls on the company to take steps to ensure that the coverage of news stories in Sussex is maintained and enhanced.

That this House warmly welcomes the decision by the train operating company South Central to reduce markedly season ticket fares on the lines from Lewes to Eastbourne and Seaford; notes the Eastbourne to Lewes price has now been cut from ??23.20 to ??15 a week and the Seaford to Lewes price from ??15 to ??10; believes this provides a real alternative for many travellers in the area; further believes that the wider applications and potential of this scheme should be considered both by the Department of Transport and the South-Coast Multi-Modal Study; also warmly welcomes the imminent official opening of the Polegate Bypass and the A22 new route into Eastbourne which has been consistently supported and lobbied for by the honourable Member for Eastbourne over many years; but, despite these welcome developments, trusts that the Multi-Modal Study will also conclude that major improvements to the A27 between Lewes and Polegate are long overdue on safety and environmental as well as economic grounds and that such improvements would benefit the whole area and in particular people and businesses in Eastbourne, by creating and integrated transport system.
