That this House notes that, despite the reliance by the Minister for the Arts on the findings of one opinion poll, most people would agree with the comments of Mr Richard Ingrams in his Observer column dated Sunday 21st October that the British Broadcasting Corporation is woefully biased.

That this House regrets the decision, all too typical, of the British Broadcasting Corporation to promote the destruction of family life by permitting Dr Geoffrey Wyatt a free five minute personal statement, without being challenged, in support of his warped and discredited views on child sexual abuse.

That this House notes that so far in the week commencing 9th July, in pursuit of their policy to support Labour Party candidates, the BBC has promoted the Labour candidate for Hampstead and Highgate on two separate programmes; and is concerned at this yet further evidence of a lack of impartiality by this public body.

That this House notes the totally biased and one-sided Today programme on 14th June affording a platform to the Labour Shadow Environment Minister to make a de facto party political broadcast without balance by a Government Minister; and regrets this further example of BBC partiality in favour of the Labour Party.

That this House heartily congratulates the Board of the British Steel Industry for their excellent financial results showing a profit of ??733 million, which compares most favourably with the historic record of the previously nationalised industry, costing as it did billions of pounds of taxpayers' money.

That this House warmly congratulates the Secretary of State for Education and Science for his robust defence of Government policy when responding to a totally biased and one-sided, though typical, BBC Newsnight programme on parental choice in education.

That this House notes that the BBC is obliged to treat controversial subjects with due impartiality and to show no bias towards one parliamentary candidate relative to another; notes further that Miss Glenda Jackson, not previously notably experienced as a television presenter, has been engaged by the BBC to present a series of campaigning and politically controversial programmes entitled, Women Mean Business; considers that it is improper, in view of Miss Jackson's well-known political ambitions, for the BBC to give such a large amount of television time to such a political partisan on a political issue; and calls upon the BBC to fulfil its obligations of impartiality and fairness either by cancelling Miss Jackson's series or by extending similar facilities to Mr Oliver Letwin, the prospective Conservative candidate for Hampstead and Highgate.

That this House welcomes the promotion of private bills by the Tees and Hartlepool Port Authority and the Clyde Port Authority to convert themselves into commercial companies; congratulates these two ports on being the first to follow the advice of the former Secretary of State for Transport; welcomes the fact that these major new companies will be based upon and run from, the Tees and Clyde, respectively; believes that these two ports can and will play a vital role in the development of commerce and jobs on Teeside and Clydeside, and in enabling these regions to trade competitively and successfully in the single European market; and calls upon all honourable Members, irrespective of party, to support these most welcome regional initiatives.

That this House regrets the lack of Northern talent that has left Hartlepool Labour Party to import a carpetbagger, Mr Peter Mandelson, with no previous connection with either Hartlepool or with the North East until the vacancy occurred; requests Labour's National Executive Committee, before confirming this candidate, to investigate fully the four page letter of complaint from the Transport and General Workers Union branch 8/325 to its regional organiser alleging harassment, intimidation and procedural irregularities; notes that one of these complaints was that Mr Mandelson has been telling members that Neil Kinnock has promised him that he will be a Minister from day one of the next Labour government; sympathises with any current Labour front-bencher who will have to make way for Mr Mandelson in this unlikely event; records its disgust at the way in which the people of Hartlepool have been treated in this shabby display of trade union patronage and bullying from London; and calls on the Northern Labour Group either to condemn the imposition of this carpetbagger upon them or else to table to this Motion an amendment of slavish obedience to the Leader of the Opposition and his public relations man.
That this House regrets the lack of Northern talent that has left Hartlepool Labour Party to import a carpetbagger, Mr Peter Mandelson, with no previous connection with either Hartlepool or with the North East until the vacancy occurred; requests Labour's National Executive Committee, before confirming this candidate, to investigate fully...
That this House notes the failure of the Labour Party to investigate fully, or at all, the complaints made to its North-East regional organiser about the selection of the prospective Labour Party candidate for Hartlepool; regrets that Mr Stephen Jones has now been pressurised by Transport and General Workers Union bosses to withdraw his candidature; believes that the deselection of the honourable Member for Birkenhead by the union block vote against the wishes of a clear majority of party members is profoundly undemocratic even by East European standards; recalls that the Conservative candidate, Mr Graham Robb, as selected on the basis of one man, one vote, believes that the people of Hartlepool deserve no less in the selection of all their prospective candidates; and therefore calls upon Hartlepool Labour Party to conduct the final selection on Sunday 17th December on the basis of one man, one vote without any further interference from trade union bosses such as Mr Joe Mills, Mr Ron Todd, Mr Tom Burlison and their henchmen.

That this House notes the four page letter of complaint from the Secretary of Transport and General Workers' Union Branch 8/325 to the north-east Regional Organiser of the Labour Party in respect of the Parliamentary candidate for Hartlepool; observes that these complaints all concern the conduct of Mr Peter Mandelson and his supporters and include irregularity, disenfranchisement, harrassment, unsavoury canvassing and false promises; supports the Transport and General Workers' Union's view that Labour's selection in Hartlepool has become 'an utter shambles and travesty of fair play'; recalls that the excellent prospective Conservative candidate, Mr Graham Robb, was selected openly and fairly on a democratic ballot; and calls upon the Leader of the Opposition to dissociate himself publicly from Mr Mandelson and from what the Transport and General Workers' Union has described as 'a very sophisticated campaign full of dirty tricks'.
