That this House recognises that it has been two years since the Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party Government in India revoked Articles 370 and 35a from its constitution, effectively stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its regional autonomy; notes that since 6 August 2019, Kashmir has been under militarised occupation by India; condemns that occupation which has resulted in the suspension of democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir, censorship of journalists in that region, the repression of activists opposed to that occupation, a communications blackout which has hampered Kashmir’s response to the covid-19 pandemic and serious human rights abuses by Indian forces in that region, including extrajudicial killing, torture, rape and illegal detention which have been well-documented by international monitoring organisations; and calls on the UK Government to bring diplomatic pressure, including sanctions, to bear upon Prime Minister Modi and his Government as a means of ending the occupation of that region and all of the human and civil rights abuses that continue to take place in that region.

That this House unequivocally condemns the ongoing violence perpetrated by Israeli authorities against Palestinian civilians in the Sheikh Jarrah area of Jerusalem; condemns the attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli police which left hundreds of civilians injured; joins the UN in calling upon the Israeli authorities to demonstrate maximum restraint and to allow the freedom of peaceful assembly for Palestinians; opposes and will work to prevent the ongoing evictions of Palestinian families from East Jerusalem, which is part of a wider attempt to push Palestinians out of Jerusalem altogether; calls on the international community to pursue suitable sanction against the Israeli Government until all violations of international law and human rights are ceased; and recognises that the violence perpetrated by the Israeli authorities in May 2021, along with the continued evictions of Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah, increases regional tensions and frustrates efforts to broker a lasting and just peace between Israel and Palestine.

That this House notes that the Train Operating Company Avanti West Coast is proposing to relocate staff from the Customer Resolutions Centre in Birmingham to the parent company, First Group’s contact centre in Sheffield, a distance of around 90 miles; understands that the distance between Birmingham and Sheffield makes it unlikely that staff will be able to transfer to the new location; is concerned that these proposals put 60 posts at risk of redundancy and could be damaging to the local economy in Birmingham; is aware that since March 2020, Avanti West Coast has been in receipt of public funding via an Emergency Measures Agreement and Emergency Recovery Measures Agreement; believes that Avanti West Coast should withdraw its proposals so that the jobs remain in Birmingham and all redundancies are avoided; and calls on the Government to ensure that future public funding for Avanti West Coast is dependent on it retaining all Customer Resolutions posts in Birmingham.
