Advanced Extension Awards were introduced in 2002, to challenge the most able advanced level students. Following changes made to A levels in 2008, including the introduction of the A* and greater stretch and challenge, Advanced Extension Awards in subjects other than mathematics ceased to be offered after 2009. The Government is not taking any specific action to encourage more A level students to undertake the Advanced Extension Award in mathematics.

Advanced extension awards were introduced in 2002, to challenge the most able advanced level students. Following changes made to A-levels in 2008, including the introduction of the A* and greater stretch and challenge, advanced extension awards in subjects other than mathematics ceased to be offered after 2009. It is important that students are well prepared for the transition between school and university, which is why the Government is reforming A-levels to ensure greater input from universities in their design and development.
