There is no requirement for RAF Northolt to monitor aviation related air quality levels. In relation to air quality, the role of both military and civil aerodromes is secondary to local authorities who are statutorily empowered to engage on air quality issues. In addition, RAF Northolt sits wholly under the London Terminal Manoeuvring Area and London Control Zone airspace, which is shared with other airports and aerodromes.
Regulatory Article (RA) 1801 sets out that UK military aircraft are certified in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation Section 16 emissions and CO2 international regulatory standards.
The RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine does publish reports on the Military Aviation Noise Contours and analysis for RAF Northolt. The last survey was conducted in 2022 and is published at the following link https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/raf-northolt-military-aviation-noise-contour-report-2022

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what plans she has to support the introduction of a new Clean Air Act with statutory air quality targets aligned with WHO guidelines.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what plans she has to support the introduction of a new Clean Air Act with statutory air quality targets aligned with WHO guidelines.
Government is focused on delivering cleaner air through the existing statutory framework, including the Environment Act 2021. England already has legally binding PM2.5 targets. We are reviewing the new Air Quality Strategy to identify the most effective actions, whilst also keeping the evidence and wider policy framework under review.

Government’s official statistics on greenhouse gas emissions cover the entirety of the UK aviation sector, including those from private jets. However, we do not separate out emissions for private jets in our analysis and therefore we are unable to compare this to commercial aviation or rail, nor how a typical four-hour private jet flight compares with average per-capita emissions in the UK.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps she is taking to ensure that improvements in air quality are maintained by local authorities which have achieved compliance and had statutory air quality directions lifted.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps she is taking to ensure that improvements in air quality are maintained by local authorities which have achieved compliance and had statutory air quality directions lifted.
Government monitors compliance with legal air quality limits nationally. Under Local Air Quality Management, local authorities are responsible for determining whether objectives are likely to be met and taking action where necessary. Defra guidance also recommends local authorities produce local Air Quality Strategies to support ongoing proactive action on air pollution.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if she will give local and strategic authorities the guidance, resources and funding to tackle poor indoor air quality.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if she will give local and strategic authorities the guidance, resources and funding to tackle poor indoor air quality.
Local authorities play an important role in improving air quality. Defra and DHSC are working with other departments to strengthen the evidence base and consider how housing, planning and public health can support better outcomes. Local authorities are best placed to determine local priorities and allocate available resources accordingly.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if she will develop a national approach to indoor air quality that brings together housing, planning and public health.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if she will develop a national approach to indoor air quality that brings together housing, planning and public health.
The Government recognises the importance of indoor air quality. Defra and DHSC are working with other departments to strengthen the evidence base and consider how housing, planning and public health can support better outcomes.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps she is taking with Cabinet colleagues to coordinate transport, health, housing and environmental policy to reduce air pollution and exposure.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps she is taking with Cabinet colleagues to coordinate transport, health, housing and environmental policy to reduce air pollution and exposure.
Government recognises that tackling air pollution requires coordinated action across transport, health, housing and environmental policy. Effective cross-government working is already underway through initiatives such as the 10-year health plan and Environmental Improvement Plan. We will also consider how collaboration can be strengthened through the Air Quality Strategy review.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what guidance, capability standards and funding her Department provides to strategic authorities and mayors to help them improve air quality.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what guidance, capability standards and funding her Department provides to strategic authorities and mayors to help them improve air quality.
As part of our commitment in the Environmental Improvement Plan 2025, this Government is delivering guidance, webinars and other resources to support local and strategic authorities in addressing air quality issues. Funding is provided through a simplified Local Government Finance Settlement.
