The Department does not hold data on the level of suicides amongst the National Health Service workforce.
Data relating to numbers of suicides in England and Wales is published regularly by the Office of National Statistics (ONS). ONS occasionally also publishes ad hoc analysis of suicide numbers by standard occupational classifications. Whilst this data does not allow identification of the employer, such as the NHS, it does present suicide numbers by broad occupation categories. The latest ad hoc publication can be found at the following link:
There is a wide range of mental health support for all NHS staff. Staff are able to access mental health support through their general practice but can also access support provided by their employer through employee assistance programmes or occupational health. NHS England also offers a range of health and wellbeing resources, including health and wellbeing apps and text support services, and NHS leaders can access the National Staff Mental Health Treatment Service which is available to both clinical and non-clinical staff and is in place to help those with more complex mental health needs. Further information on the National Staff Mental Health Treatment Service is available at the following link:
https://www.practitionerhealth.nhs.uk/
The service is designed to offer confidential support to NHS professionals, who cannot access confidential support locally.
NHS England has also published a national suicide prevention toolkit and postvention toolkit to help organisations introduce prevention strategies and support their workforce, both of which are available, respectively, at the following two links:

The pay deal that was accepted by the NHS Staff Council on 2 May 2023 covered staff directly employed by NHS organisations. Independent providers, including not-for-profit organisations and social enterprises, are free to develop and adapt their own terms and conditions of employment. If they choose to utilise the terms and conditions of NHS staff on the Agenda for Change contract, it is for them to determine what is affordable within the financial model they operate and how to recoup any additional costs they face.

Individuals employed directly by the National Health Service on Agenda for Change contract are entitled to the pay award agreed by the NHS Staff Council on 2 May. Where the NHS contracts out services to independent providers or other local public sector organisations, it is for those employers to determine pay, terms and conditions and eligibility for pay rises.
No assessment has been made of the full cost of passing on the non-consolidated awards for 2022/23 to all staff employed by NHS contractors. An assessment has been made of the cost of passing on the consolidated award for 2023/24, and additional funding for this will be provided in the normal way.

For the 2023/24 consolidated pay uplift for Agenda for Change staff, funding will be provided to National Health Service providers through the usual routes. The 2022/23 non-consolidated pay uplift for Agenda for Change staff applies to staff directly employed by an NHS organisation as set out in Annex 1 of the NHS Employers handbook. Independent providers and local authorities were not eligible to receive funding for the non-consolidated awards. Where non NHS employers have chosen to adopt the same terms and conditions as offered on the Agenda for Change contract, they should work with commissioners to determine handling of any additional costs in line with local contracts.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will hold discussions with his counterparts in EU countries on allowing UK support crew members working with touring musicians and performing artists to work in Europe for more than 90 days without applying for a visa.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will hold discussions with his counterparts in EU countries on allowing UK support crew members working with touring musicians and performing artists to work in Europe for more than 90 days without applying for a visa.
The UK Government is committed to supporting the creative sector to adapt to requirements for touring in the EU. The vast majority of Member States including the UK's biggest touring markets offer visa and work permit free routes for musicians and creative performers. The Government has engaged with the remaining Member States on allowing creative professionals to tour more easily, however ultimately it is up to these countries to align their requirements more closely with the UK's generous rules.

To ask His Majesty's Government what plans they have to address staffing shortages to ensure that patients receive high-quality, allied healthcare professional and ancillary care, including those patients occupying the additional 7,000 hospital beds announced in August 2022.
To ask His Majesty's Government what plans they have to address staffing shortages to ensure that patients receive high-quality, allied healthcare professional and ancillary care, including those patients occupying the additional 7,000 hospital beds announced in August 2022.
Local National Health Service trusts are responsible for managing its own staffing levels and for recruiting the number of health professionals required to meet local service need as part of their workforce planning. The NHS published plans for increasing capacity in urgent and emergency care over winter. The plans looked to reduce hospital occupancy through increasing capacity by the equivalent of at least 7,000 general and acute beds, through a mix of new physical beds, virtual wards and improvements elsewhere in the pathway. This intervention was developed with integrated care boards responsible for developing plans to achieve this increase in bed capacity based on realistic assumptions, including how many staff can be recruited and at what speed.
To help address staff shortages Health Education England (HEE) National Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Workforce Supply Project delivered valuable recruitment initiatives including improved return to practice pathways, pre-registration apprenticeships and more jobs for new graduates helping to improve staffing shortages. A HEE national programme started in 2022/23 to support NHS trusts with AHP international recruitment.
Furthermore, all-eligible nursing, midwifery and allied health profession degree students have received a non-repayable training grant of a minimum of £5,000 per academic year. To support future workforce planning the Department have commissioned NHS England to develop a long term plan for the NHS workforce for the next 15 years. The plan will help ensure that we have the right numbers of staff, with the right skills to transform and deliver high quality services fit for the future.
