To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what contingency plans her Department has in place to prevent delays to animal products leaving the UK should Official Veterinarian capacity decline before certification requirements arising from current export arrangements are removed.
The UK is currently negotiating an SPS Agreement with the EU. These negotiations are at an advanced stage and expected to remove the requirement for Export Health Certificates. The Agreement will have implications for Official Veterinarians undertaking export certification, including the demand for Export Health Certificate (EHC) services. Defra are working with the veterinary profession and wider industry stakeholders to monitor this capability and ensure an effective and well-managed transition.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the risk to food and animal product exporters of a decline in official veterinarian capacity delaying export health certification ahead of the removal of sanitary and phytosanitary checks.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what progress has been made on introducing clearer country-of-origin and method-of-production food labelling to support higher animal welfare standards since the Government response to the Fairer Food Labelling consultation.
As set out in the Government’s animal welfare strategy, and the Farming Roadmap published in June 2026, we are committed to ensuring that consumers have access to clear information on how and where their food was produced.
To support this, we will continue working with relevant stakeholders, including the farming and food industry, scientists and NGOs to explore how improved animal welfare food labelling could provide greater consumer transparency, support farmers and promote better animal welfare. We will set out next steps in due course.
We will also continue to review origin labelling, using the outcomes of the Fairer Food Labelling consultation as supporting evidence for future labelling policy.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what recent steps her Department has taken to help prevent the importation of low-welfare animal products.
The Government will not lower food standards and will uphold high animal welfare protections.
The Government will always consider whether overseas goods benefit from an unfair advantage and any impact on UK producers. Where necessary, the Government will use the full range of powers at Government’s disposal including permanent quotas, exclusions and safeguards. For example, the trade deal with India agreed in May 2025 and the recently agreed deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council both reflect the priorities of the farming sector, including opening new opportunities for UK agricultural exports and excluding pork, chicken and eggs from tariff reductions.

Defra officials continue to engage with relevant stakeholders to determine the scope and design of this ban, including what will be required to implement it effectively. The detail of arrangements such as training for border officials and checks at cargo and passenger terminals will be considered as part of that design work.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which species of conservation concern will be covered by the forthcoming legislation to ban the import of hunting trophies.
Defra continues to engage with relevant stakeholders to help determine the most appropriate scope for a ban. Species of conservation concern are listed primarily on Appendices I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) based on the level of threat that international trade poses to their conservation status.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, how many import permits were issued for hunting trophies between July 1, 2024 to May 31, 2026, for which species, and for what type of hunting trophy.
Between 1 July 2024 and 31 May 2026, the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) issued 33 import permits for hunting trophies under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),
Trade data up to 2024 is available on the CITES Trade Database CITES Trade Database.
The species of the 33 import permits issued under purpose H (- Hunting Trophies) between 1 July 2024 and 31st May 2026 were as follows:
- Crocodylus niloticus
- Giraffa camelopardalis
- Hippopotamus amphibius (x 5)
- Loxodonta Africana (x 18)
- Oryx dammah
- Panthera leo
- Panthera pardus
- Ursus americanus (x 3)
- Ursus arctos (x 2)
It is important to note that a single permit does not necessarily correspond to a single animal; in some cases, multiple CITES permits may be required for an individual animal.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what percentage of consignments of products of animal-origin were taken, after being flagged, from Dover to the Border Control Post in Sevington from December 2025 to May 2026.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what percentage of consignments of products of animal-origin were taken, after being flagged, from Dover to the Border Control Post in Sevington from December 2025 to May 2026.
Checks at the border are intelligence-led and based on biosecurity risk. To protect the integrity of these controls, detailed operational data on inspections is not routinely published. Data is not held in the form requested. Available data relates to whether vehicles rather than consignments attended Sevington Border Control Post.
However, for the period December 2025 to April 2026 (as May data is not yet available), we can advise that for Port Health 71.7% of vehicles listed on the manifest for CHED-P and CHED-D arrived at the Sevington Border Control Post. The remaining 28.3% did not attend.
Non-attendance is followed up by Ashford Port Health and recorded in PHILIS to establish the reason. Non-attendance does not necessarily indicate non-compliance. For example, consignments may not have been loaded or shipped and therefore did not enter Great Britain, may have travelled under a different vehicle registration, or may have been processed through an alternative point of entry or control point.
