The £1.1 billion identified in the Defence Investment Plan for Apache helicopters represents investment across the capability, including training and support arrangements, weapons procurement, capability upgrades, spiral development and obsolescence management.
This investment will ensure the Army's AH-64E Apache fleet remains an effective and modern battlefield capability, including enhancements to interoperability and integration with emerging technologies.

Project NYX represents the cutting edge of the Defence Industrial Strategy, working with leading British industry partners to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of autonomous military technology. The Defence Investment Plan provides funding for a total of up to 24 autonomous drones by 2030.
As Project NYX is currently in the concept and demonstration phase no decision has yet been taken on the size of any future departmental fleet of autonomous systems to augment AH-64E Apache beyond 2030. This will be informed by the outcome of the demonstration phase, which is expected to conclude in 2028.

Project NYX is a demonstrator to validate the concept of a Land Autonomous Collaborative Platform. Public information is available via the Defence Sourcing Portal, the Ministry of Defence’s tendering platform, and Find a Tender service.
The competition for Project NYX began on 28 November 2025 with the Pre-Qualification Questionnaire release. The Invitation to Tender will be issued week of 12 January 2026 and close 27 February 2026.
Completion will inform future procurement, with initial capability delivery expected from 2030. No decision has been made on platform numbers; these will depend on evolving strategies and requirements.

The initial procurement of the UK Apache 64E utilised US Government Foreign Military Sales and is currently forecast to cost is £1.793 billion against an approval of £1.999 billion. The long term training and support for Apache 64E is supplied by Boeing Defence UK and the current five year Long Term Training and Support Contract has a value of £341,199,072.50. This does not include operating costs of the Apache 64E which are accounted for separately.

The decision to make periodic deployments of Chinook and Apache helicopters to Estonia from January 2023 did not come following a specific request from the Estonian Government, but rather from the wider commitments the UK made at NATO's Madrid Summit in June 2022. The UK has since worked closely with Estonia to implement our Madrid Summit commitments and ensure that our force posture is commensurate with Estonia's and NATO's security needs. This culminated in the Secretary of State for Defence and the Estonian Defence Minister signing a Roadmap on 8 November which sets out our joint plan to deliver our Madrid Summit commitments, including the periodic deployment of helicopters, for the forward defence of Estonia.

The Apache AH-64E initial operating capability (IOC) is defined as one AH-64E v6 squadron 'at Readiness', cleared to support operational use with full security accreditation; the delivery of two linked and accredited land simulators to conduct mission rehearsal training; and a long-term maintenance and training package.
IOC is expected to be achieved in 2023 and Full Operating Capability in 2026.
