To ask the Secretary of State for Education, whether his Department records the number of young people who (a) visit Auschwitz on educational visits and (b) take part in other educational visits to remember the Holocaust and its victims.

The Department funds the Holocaust Educational Trust’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ which provides for two students, aged 16-18, and a teacher from every state funded school/sixth form college in England to visit Auschwitz-Bikenau. £2,126,437 is being provided in 2019-20 and £2,193,675 in 2020-21. We expect a minimum of 1,968 students to undertake visits through this programme in 2019-20.
Additionally, £1.7 million for the 2019-20 financial year is being provided for the Bergen-Belsen Commemoration Programme. The programme provides for pupils and teachers from state funded secondary schools in England to visit Bergen-Belsen to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp. We expect a minimum of 1,290 pupils to undertake visits through this programme in 2019-20.
Yesterday marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. I welcome my right hon. Friend’s acceptance of all the recommendations from the Holocaust
Commission, which was set up by this Government. Will he in particular make sure that the lasting monument to that terrible tragedy is accessible throughout the United Kingdom and will he safeguard the funding for the Lessons from Auschwitz project, so ably put together by the Holocaust Education Trust?

I am sure that my hon. Friend speaks on behalf of the whole House and indeed the whole country in wanting to commemorate properly the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and to ensure that here in Britain we properly commemorate the horrors of Auschwitz for years to come. The Leader of the Opposition, the Deputy Prime Minister and I were privileged to meet so many survivors yesterday with the extraordinary stories that they have to tell, but they cannot go on telling those stories for ever, so it is vital that we record their testimony; that we make sure that education about the holocaust is maintained; that we establish this national monument, for which three places have been identified; and that this work goes head, starting now with all-party support.

The UK will be represented at the official commemoration ceremony for the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau to be held in Auschwitz-Birkenau on 27 January by my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary, and my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The delegation will include survivors of Auschwitz, the British Ambassador to Warsaw, representatives of the Holocaust Educational Trust and the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
The UK has donated £2.1 million to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation. We have been very closely involved in the efforts made by the Foundation to raise the remaining amount for the Perpetual Fund that will enable the Museum and Memorial to function indefinitely. Our Ambassador in Warsaw has been helping to lead efforts to engage the private sector in supporting the Fund, including by hosting a meeting to discuss how to assist the Foundation in promoting the idea of 18 Pillars of Remembrance – involving substantial contributions by private donors.
The Government supports the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust to deliver the national commemoration and local activities across the UK, and will be represented at a senior level at this year’s commemoration. Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 was the most successful to date with 2,400 activities having taken place. Reflecting our Chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, we have encouraged our Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates around the world to make a special effort this year to host or sponsor various activities on 27 January to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. We hosted a major Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on 21 January in partnership with the Embassy of Israel in London.
I agree 100% with the hon. Gentleman in everything he says. Anyone who has been to Auschwitz—I went recently—cannot help but be struck by the appalling end that came of the hatred and prejudice fostered across Europe. The sight of all those children’s clothes, toys and bags, and human hair, stays with people for a very long time after they have seen them. Ensuring that the Holocaust Commission that we have established reports soon has all-party support. We will take that work forward and continue to ensure that young people in our schools can make the harrowing but very powerful trip to see Auschwitz for themselves.

Mr David Winnick (Walsall North) (Lab):
As we know, next week it will be 70 years since Auschwitz was liberated by the Russians. Is it not important that, when issues such as Palestine are raised—I have raised it and will continue to do so—it should be no excuse for anti-Semitism, a murderous disease that took the lives of millions of innocent people during my lifetime?

My Lords, I take this opportunity to congratulate my noble friend Lord Boswell of Aynho on securing this extremely important debate. My Lords, I join other noble Lords in congratulating the noble Lord, Lord Boswell, on securing this debate. The date is perhaps a little unfortunate, but at least we are in the right Room, because the picture on the wall is actually of the event that the festival celebrates. Anti-Semitism...

My Lords, some noble Lords may be aware that in another place I participated in the all-party inquiry on anti-Semitism which sat in 2005 and reported in 2006. I should make it clear that I did so neither as a member of the Jewish faith nor as a Member of...
