That this House fully supports the work and success of the National Breast Screening Programme in increasing the number of small, curable breast cancers detected by breast screening; recognises the important contribution to this sucess made by the 1995 Directive that requires two view screening to be used for all first round screens; notes with concern however, that fewer than 40 per cent. of breast units are achieving the national expected standards for breast cancer detection ratios; in light of this, draws attention to recent figures published by the Cancer Screening Evaluation Unit which indicate that two view screens at subsequent rounds detect between 25 and 42 per cent. more small cancers than one view, and to research that demonstrates that in terms of cost per cancer detected, two view screening is as cost-effective as one-view; and, therefore, calls on the Government to respond to these significant findings by making two view screening mandatory for all rounds of screening at the earliest possible opportunity.
