âWe believe that media freedom is the lifeblood of democracy, and that it is vital to protect the ability of journalists and other media workers to hold the powerful to account. We are concerned by the increase in the number of journalists being targeted because of their work. For this reason we are placing the resources of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office behind a campaign to shine a spotlight on this issue and to galvanise a consensus behind the protection of journalists.
We regularly raise media and press freedom in visits to Central and Eastern European countries as well as in multilateral fora, including the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. We work with media organisations and civil society across the region to deliver projects to protect and support journalists.
Additionally, the UK continues to be vocal in calling for an end to attacks on journalists, including in the case of the horrific murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée in Slovakia in February last year.

We do not comment in detail on military planning but I can confirm that the UK holds units at high readiness able to deploy at short notice should the Government decide to do so.
In the NATO context, the Alliance has taken a series of decisions to improve the speed and efficiency of its response to any potential crisis. For example, a decision at the Wales Summit in 2014 established the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (which the UK led in 2017) as a spearheaded element of the NATO Response Force.
At its Summit in July we expect the Alliance to agree a Readiness Initiative and work to improve Military Mobility that will further strengthen NATO's capabilities.

Freedom of religion or belief is a priority human rights area for the Government. We work actively to defend it in our bilateral relations with individual countries, including lobbying for changes in discriminatory laws and practices and through our work in multilateral institutions.
We also carry out project work in a range of countries working with non-governmental organisations on issues such as promoting better understanding between faiths, bridging sectarian divides, promoting dialogue between faith groups and government and offering technical advice on laws that need amendment.
Although central Europe is not a particular area of focus for us, we do play an active part in the work of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to share best practice in combating intolerance and discrimination against individuals on the basis of their religion or belief. We participated actively in the recent Human Dimension Implementation meeting in Warsaw, and last year nominated a UK representative to the OSCE’s Advisory Panel of Experts on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

The CPS International Division has been involved in a range of activities intended to strengthen the capacity of criminal justice practitioners in Albania, Montenegro and Bulgaria. The Serious Fraud Office has provided assistance to countries within central and eastern Europe investigating frauds committed in the region. I also have bilateral relationships with prosecutors. For example, I recently attended the International Association of Prosecutors in Moscow where 1 held a bilateral with the Prosecutor General of Albania.
In addition, the Ministry of Justice and Home Office have also been involved in rule of law projects in the area. Such projects, along with liaison and engagement, promote the rule of law.
