That this House recognises Glasgow’s successful bid to host the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games which begins next week, running from 23 July 23 to 2 August; notes that Glasgow is an excellent choice as a host city; acknowledges the significance of such an event in welcoming 3,000 athletes from a total of 74 nations and territories to the city; celebrates the Scottish Government's commitment to providing support for Scotland House to operate as a central hub for business engagement, private space for Team Scotland, and a media centre throughout the Games; supports the recent Scottish Parliament motion calling for UK Government ministers to make the Games free-to-air as it has for the previous 18 Commonwealth Games, beyond the nightly coverage currently planned; and further notes that Scots should be able to watch the Commonwealth Games without a financial barrier and laments the impact this decision will have on future generations of Scottish athletes.

That this House expresses concern at reports that the Ulster Banner, the flag traditionally used to represent Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games, may be discontinued ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games; recognises that for many decades the Ulster Banner has been carried with pride by Northern Irish athletes and supporters alike and has accompanied numerous memorable sporting achievements on the international stage; acknowledges that the continued use of the Ulster Banner in sport has provided a rallying point for athletes and communities through shared competition and sporting excellence; notes that the Ulster Banner, despite no longer having formal governmental status, has an established and longstanding role within the Commonwealth sporting tradition; further expresses concern that replacing it with an alternative emblem without widespread consultation risks politicising sport and placing athletes at the centre of constitutional debate; believes that sport should transcend politics, promote unity and allow competitors to focus fully on performance; calls on the Commonwealth Games Federation to retain the Ulster Banner as the flag under which Northern Ireland has historically competed, and to ensure that any proposed changes to long-standing symbols are undertaken only following comprehensive consultation with athletes, sporting bodies and the wider community; and affirms that the Commonwealth Games should remain a celebration of sporting achievement free from unnecessary political controversy.

The Government does not provide direct funding to any of the UK’s Commonwealth Games associations. We provide the majority of support for grassroots sport through our Arm’s Length Body, Sport England. In this financial year, Sport England awarded £1.5 million to Commonwealth Games England.
That this House notes concern that it has been reported that the Chief Executive and Chairman of Commonwealth Games, Northern Ireland feel the flag is not representative of everyone and have suggested a change to a new emblem for the 2026 games in Glasgow; highlights that there is no appetite for change within those that perform under the Ulster banner by any community recognising that the Ulster banner contains the links to the Irish red hand of Ulster as well as the crown; and calls on the Government to support retention of the status quo and to cease the politicisation of sport which unifies us all.

The UK is proud to have hosted the Commonwealth Games twice in the past decade. This government welcomes the £1bn of Gross Value Added to the UK economy from the Games, including hundreds of millions to the local economy in the West Midlands. The Legacy Enhancement Fund from the Games continues to drive inward investment to and grassroots activity in the region, ensuring the area benefits from a lasting legacy of hosting the Games.
The Government is committed to developing grassroots sport and will work with our Arms Length Body Sport England to support projects which facilitate participation in the Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency. DCMS’s Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities and Park Tennis Courts programme have already had an impact in the area by investing in a new 3G football surface at Roe Lane Playing Fields, and will continue to deliver high-quality, inclusive grassroots facilities that help more people access sport wherever they live.

This country is proud to have hosted the Commonwealth games twice in the past decade, most recently in Birmingham. I have had conversations with the Commonwealth Games Federation on its plans, and I know it is currently considering a host of options. I will see what it comes out with before I commit to any further engagement.

The UK is proud to have hosted the Commonwealth Games twice in the past decade. The record-breaking Birmingham Games in 2022 came in under budget and added at least £870 million of Gross Value Added to the UK economy, and hundreds of millions to the local economy in the West Midlands.
We are committed to working with the Commonwealth Games Federation and other Commonwealth countries to support a sustainable future for the Games. It is important that the Games remain a truly global event that gives athletes from around the world the chance to compete, and we continue to encourage the Commonwealth Games Federation to explore all hosting possibilities.

All grants associated with the delivery of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have now closed and met their objectives.
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games came in on time and under its £778 million budget, which included £594 million of funding from central government. The Games have accelerated investment and regeneration in Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond.
This core public investment has also helped to unlock over £85 million additional funding from a range of bodies including a £35 million investment from Sport England to deliver a physical activity legacy.
The government is committed to robust evaluation of the impacts driven by its investments. An interim evaluation report on the impact of the Games has shown it has added £870 million GVA to the UK economy, with a final impact report to be published in early 2024.
