Henry Smith (Crawley) (Con):
Crawley constituency was one of the most negatively affected by the covid-19 pandemic, but thanks to significant support from the Government we are seeing recovery. Unemployment is now beginning to come down and we look to a confident future. In that vein, will my right hon. Friend please look favourably on Crawley’s platinum jubilee city-status bid?
—but I will look at it very carefully. I am sure there is an excellent case in there somewhere.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much his Department has spent on events to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee (a) in the UK and (b) overseas.

Her Majesty the Queen's diamond jubilee offers an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the strengths of the UK to the world, alongside our efforts linked to the London Olympics and Paralympics and the GREAT campaign, while the country enjoys unprecedented levels of attention.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has sought to promote Britain as an open, connected, creative and dynamic country that successfully combines history and tradition with modernity and innovation. We have created opportunities overseas to allow everyone who wants to celebrate the jubilee to be able to, in a manner befitting the current financial climate.
The FCO GREAT and 2012 programme fund allocated £123,000 for 30 specific diamond jubilee events overseas (most supplemented by local sponsorship) reaching an estimated media audience of hundreds of millions.
There are many other jubilee events taking place in the UK and overseas throughout the whole year and it will take time for all the relevant expenditure to be charged and accounted for after the end of the year. In addition, the majority of events organised by our network of posts overseas have been wholly or partially paid out of locally held budgets and these figures are therefore not available without incurring disproportionate cost.

We had hoped to be able to fly the flags of the Overseas Territories (OT) at this summer's ceremonial events, but the first manufacturers of the bespoke ceremonial flagpoles and flags delivered products which were unusable, or which required specialist repair before they could be used. The repairs and replacements are currently being undertaken and we expect to be able to fly the OT flags at future ceremonial events.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they will ask Tate Modern why they failed to fly a Union Flag or display any recognition of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on the face of their building during the Jubilee celebration and the river flotilla procession.[HL840]
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they will ask Tate Modern why they failed to fly a Union Flag or display any recognition of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on the face of their building during the Jubilee celebration and the river flotilla procession.[HL840]
Both Tate Britain and Tate Modern actively participated in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
A Union Flag was displayed at Tate Britain on the existing flag pole. There is no flag pole at Tate Modern, and therefore no Union Flag was displayed.
Tate Modern welcomed visitors, making its landscape available for a giant screen and for the BBC to park its outside broadcast vehicles. It also provided a balcony for international film crews.
The restaurant, a private room and all the balconies were open to visitors who arrived early. As a result of this, hundreds of members of the public were able to take advantage of exceptional views of the river flotilla procession.

Members of the armed forces have been fully involved in marking the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen's accession to the throne. The costs associated with this activity are currently being collated. I will write to the hon. Member as soon as these are available.
Substantive answer from Andrew Robathan to Roger Godsiff:
I undertook to write to you in answer to your Parliamentary Question about Diamond Jubilee costs on 19 June 2012, Official Report, column 933W, which were then being collated.
The costs associated with the Armed Forces Parade and Muster at Windsor, the Thames River Pageant and the Service of Thanksgiving are in the region of £880,000. This figure represents marginal costs incurred as the participation of the Armed Forces was deemed core business. It includes the costs of the flypasts.

The national events that took place over the four day jubilee weekend in London, were funded by the organisers, and through individual donations and corporate partnerships. Costs for elements of support and co-ordination falling to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, including certain stewarding and temporary structures built for the public and media, are still being finalised.
