To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps she is taking to improve pancreatic cancer outcomes in East Ham constituency.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps she is taking to improve pancreatic cancer outcomes in East Ham constituency.
NHS England is delivering a range of interventions that are expected to increase early diagnosis and improve outcomes for those with pancreatic cancer across England, including the East Ham constituency. This includes: providing a route into pancreatic cancer surveillance for those at inherited high-risk to identify lesions before they develop into cancer and diagnose cancers sooner; creating new pathways to support faster referral routes for people with non-specific symptoms that could be linked to a range of cancer types; and increasing direct access for general practitioners to diagnostic tests.
To increase early diagnosis, NHS England are implementing non-symptom specific pathways (NSS) for patients who present with non-specific symptoms, or combinations of non-specific symptoms, to receive the right tests at the right time. There are currently 113 NSS pathways live with the aim to have full national coverage by 2025.
NHS England is also funding a new audit into pancreatic cancer, the aim of which is to provide regular and timely evidence to cancer service providers of where patterns of care in England may vary, to increase the consistency of access to treatments and to stimulate improvements in cancer treatment and outcomes for patients. The Royal College of Surgeons began work on this audit in October 2022 and a scoping exercise in consultation with key stakeholders has taken place to shape the direction of the audit. The first report is expected in October 2024.
In addition, the Getting It Right First Time team in NHS England is undertaking a deep dive into pancreatic cancer, which will highlight actions National Health Service providers need to take to improve services, as well as gathering examples of good practice to share.

Lease-holders in Kingfisher Court, built by Barratt in my constituency, have just been told that, unlike leaseholders in very similar buildings nearby, their application to the building safety fund has been rejected. They do not know why, and they now face bankruptcy. Can the right hon. Gentleman offer any reassurance that I can take when I meet them later this evening?

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, what assessment his Department has made of the effect of increased journey times and travel costs for people currently using East Ham jobcentre of its closure.
We have sought to to minimise the impact on claimants travel as far as possible. The new site at Barking is 1.6 miles from the existing site and Jobcentre Plus is able to reimburse travel costs for those claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance or the equivalent claimants in Universal Credit for any attendance above their fortnightly signing appointment. In addition, those claiming Employment and Support Allowance and Income Support are not generally required to attend their local Jobcentre regularly.
Throughout our planning we calculated distances and journey times to Barking using a variety of methods to ensure accuracy, including online tools and timetables, information collected on local public transport routes, and input and scrutiny from local DWP staff and management. Rather than assess the travel time from customers’ homes to their current and proposed new Jobcentre, we have focused instead on the distances between existing and proposed Jobcentre locations to help customers better understand any differences in distance. This is to reflect the fact that people who travel to the Jobcentre will use whichever type of transport suits their personal circumstances, they may not be starting their journey from their home, and not all those who use our services are claimants.
In addition, throughout the development of these proposals, the department has been mindful of the impact on staff and customers as part of its duties under section 149 of the Equality Act 2010. Statistical analysis of the potential impact of the proposals on people with the protected characteristics has informed high-level decision-making so far. As we obtain further local, site-specific information we will ensure any issues identified are also taken fully into consideration when the final decisions are made.

The relocation of the Jobcentre at East Ham to Barking which is 1.6 miles away is still only a proposal at this time.
Where we are proposing to close a jobcentre we are taking all possible precautions to minimise disruption for customers and claimants and we are now collecting local, site-specific information which will be reflected in the final business case and taken fully into consideration when the final decision is made.
Should the decision be made to close East Ham Jobcentre, the Department will continue to work with the Local Authority to ensure any claimant impacted will still have access to support provided by Workplace. Should this involve fares to another Jobcentre, consideration will be made as appropriate on the use of the flexible support fund.

Subject to further consideration of the proposal we hope to relocate all 31 staff and services from the current East Ham Jobcentre to Barking where we will continue to offer the same level of service to customers and claimants.

In addition, our merged Jobcentres will continue to offer internet access to support claimants and we are working with local authorities as part of our ongoing partnership to improve digital access and capability.
Where we are proposing to close a jobcentre we are taking all possible precautions to minimise disruption for customers, and vulnerable people will receive home visits and have the opportunity to make postal claims.
