Government Ministers and officials meet with representatives of the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB)—alongside other engineering institutions —on a regular basis to address a range of engineering issues, including the need to ensure that we have sufficient graduate engineers to meet the major challenges of our time.
The ETB delivers a number of initiatives supported by Government to raise awareness of engineering careers. This includes the Big Bang Fair and some parts of National Science and Engineering Week as well as working with the Royal Academy of Engineering and others on Tomorrow's Engineers.
Engineering UK, the ETB's annual commentary on the UK's engineering and technology labour market, provides insight into how we strengthen Britain's engineering base for future growth.

The hon. Gentleman is, of course, right—although, as he knows, many women do possess the physical strength to carry around various tools. We know from the latest data that 72 per cent. of women with such qualifications are not working in the science, engineering and technology professions, and I hope that everyone involved will do more to return women to those professions, because we need their skills.

I thank the Minister for that helpful answer. As she will know, engineering no longer means walking around with a heavy monkey wrench. Although when I used to go to the Soviet Union in the 1980s I would see women engineers with heavy monkey wrenches, nowadays it is much more a question of thought, intelligence and design. Does the Minister not agree that women have a particular skill in engineering and ergonomics—designing what is right for the man-machine, and woman-machine, interface—which makes this an ideal career path?

Mrs. Curtis-Thomas: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what assessment she has made of the statement of the
working group set up by the Hawley Review in the report "Universe of Engineering" on the research needed to estimate the number of
people who practise engineering. [39532]
Mr. Wilson: [holding answer 4 March 2002]: The "Universe of Engineering" Report was produced by The Royal Academy of Engineering to
assist The Hawley Group in its review of the Engineering Council and the needs of the wider engineering and technology community in
the UK. The Report concluded that at least 2 million people are now employed in skilled engineering and technology jobs in this
country, and that a new type of organisation, taking over from the Engineering Council, was required to support them.
The Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) has been established for this purpose and is now starting work with the full support of
Government. The ETB's principal aims are:
(1) Start the reversal of the downward trends in the supply of people (of all ages) with qualifications and skills relevant to
engineering and technology based careers and jobs.
(2) Achieve a marked notable shift in public attitudes towards, and understanding of, engineering and technology in today's economy.
(3) Build effective and valued links with business and industry, reflecting its real-time and future needs.

Mr. Key: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what the role of the Engineering and Technology Board is; who the
chairman is; and if she will make a statement. [21504]
Mr. Wilson: The Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) has been set up to be responsive to the needs of the "wider engineering and
technology community" and reflect the interests of key stakeholder groups, including business and industry, registered engineers,
professional institutions, academia and the rapidly developing technology sector. It is based on extensive preparatory work
undertaken by The Hawley Group and an ETB `Shadow Board'.
The ETB starts work formally in the new year and high on the ETB's list of priorities will be issues such as: skills; the importance
and attractiveness of engineering and technology-based careers; and the needs of the rapidly growing technology sector.
The first chairman of the Engineering and Technology Board is Dr. Robert Hawley, who also chaired the shadow ETB and the Engineering
Council. On 1 January 2002 Sir Peter Williams will replace him as ETB chair.
A second organisation, the Engineering Council (UK) (ECUK) took over the former Engineering Council's regulatory functions at the
close of the 6 December Engineering Council Senate meeting. Professor Patrick Dowling was named as the first EC(UK) chair.
