The UK (Home Office) has deployed two Liaison Officers to Greece and one Liaison Officer to Italy. The UK also continues our long-running specialist deployments to the EU Commission and EASO to support their work in Greece (UK officers included in numbers stated in the below reports).
The number of experts and interpreters deployed to Greek islands by the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) is available in their annual report. The most recent annual report was published in September 2017 and covers 2016 and can be found here: https://www.easo.europa.eu/easo-annual-report. In 2016 there were 543 experts deployed in Greece. EASO also deployed interpreters/cultural mediators to conduct its operations. Published figures for 2017 are not available yet.

The UK continues to provide resource to EASO to help Member States whose asylum and reception systems are under pressure.
Last year, the Government took a decision not to opt in to the proposed EU Agency for Asylum, which will replace EASO. Written Ministerial Statement HCWS373 of 16 December refers. Until EASO is replaced, we remain a full member, maintaining voting rights at the management board and playing a strong role in influencing EU asylum policy. While the UK remains a member of the EU, we will continue to remain fully engaged in EU discussions on migration and security. The Government will consider the UK’s future relationship with the EU in terms of asylum cooperation as part of the broader EU exit negotiations.

The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) plays an important role in supporting asylum cooperation between Member States and in helping those Member States whose asylum and reception systems are under pressure. EASO is funded directly by the EU budget.
The Government continues to support the principle of EU hotspots and has deployed resources through EASO to the hotspots in Italy and Greece.
Last year, the Government took a decision not to opt in to the proposed EU Agency for Asylum, which will replace EASO. The Government’s key consideration was the significant amount of oversight of the UK asylum system, which would be given to the Agency should the UK choose to participate. Written Ministerial Statement HCWS373 of 16 December refers.
Until the UK leaves the EU, there will be no immediate changes to how the UK engages with EASO. Until then, we remain a full member of EASO, maintaining voting rights at the management board and playing a strong role in influencing EU asylum policy.
The Government will consider the UK’s future relationship with the EU in terms of asylum cooperation as part of the broader EU exit negotiations.

The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) is funded directly by the EU budget.
The first EASO operating plan to support the reconstruction of the Greek asylum system was signed on 1 April 2011. Support from Member States to support missions commenced after this date. We do not hold a precise record of personnel support provided to EASO from this period but in the last three years EASO advises that the UK has contributed over 1,000 expert working days in deployments to Greece, Italy, Bulgaria and Cyprus.
During the current financial year the UK has provided EASO with 11 asylum experts and an interpreter in over 16 separate deployments. This includes one UK expert on long term deployment to Greece to assist Greek authorities with European funding matters and an expert to support the Italian country of origin information unit for six months followed by one week a month until March 2016.
So far we have provided EASO with four experts to assist with their coordination and operation of ‘hotspots’ in Greece and Italy. These measures are due to continue until the end of 2017 and we envisage that we will continue to contribute for this duration. On 28th January the Government announced further initiatives to assist unaccompanied children in the region which include further resources to EASO to help identify and register children at risk on first arrival in the EU in “hotspots” such as Greece and Italy. We are working closely with EASO to monitor the situation and provide expertise as necessary.
Deployment lengths vary according the task but typically personnel providing support to a hotspot mission will be released for a month’s duration.
