Having left the EU, the UK is no longer a member of the European Environment Agency (EEA) or the European Environment Information and Observation Network (EIONET).
We have continued to co-operate with the EEA EU partners as appropriate, with a driving focus on delivering security and prosperity for the British people.

We are committed to working closely with the Devolved Administrations as the UK exits the EU.
Defra Ministers and officials speak regularly with counterparts from the Devolved Administrations on issues relating to EU exit, including at a regular Inter-Ministerial Group. This includes discussions on the environment and future relationship with EU bodies.

The Government is committed to high environmental standards and to increasing, not weakening, environmental protections as we leave the EU. To support this, current EU legislative requirements concerning monitoring, measuring and reporting have been reflected in EU exit Statutory Instruments, and will continue to be implemented after the UK leaves the EU. Our preparations for leaving the EU reflect this, including replacing functions previously carried out by the European Environment Agency.

Plans for the European Environment Information and Observation Network are directly linked to the EEA and will therefore be determined by the outcome of these negotiations.
We do not want or expect a no deal outcome. We have however always been clear that the Government would prepare for every outcome, including the unlikely event of a no deal.

Within the European Environment Agency budget[1] it is not possible to identify the membership cost for any individual EU Member State. The European Environment Agency undergoes regular independently-conducted evaluations[2] and the UK Government is fully engaged with the evaluation currently in progress[3]. When published in 2018, this evaluation will enhance our understanding of the benefits of European Environment Agency membership.

While the UK remains a member of the EU we are required to fully participate in the European Environment Agency (EEA) as an EEA member country.
As we start the process of leaving the EU, we will aim to deliver a stable and clear legislative framework for the environment, including maintaining standards that underpin trade and deliver on our international commitments. It is within this framework that we will plan our future participation in the EEA.
