I thank my hon. Friend for that extensive answer. I know he realises that the Commonwealth games are very important to Glasgow and, for that matter, to the UK. However, the people I have been speaking to have some concerns about job opportunities and investment in the city that might have a knock-on effect on the games. They cite the 40 per cent. cut in funding for Glasgow's science centre, with a loss of 28 jobs, as an example of what could happen if the Edinburgh Executive have a go at it. Will he assure me that he and his Department will ensure that the Glasgow Commonwealth games are properly funded and go ahead as planned?

I am glad that my hon. Friend liked my original answer, when I said that the Secretary of State has regular discussions with the First Minister. That is more than I do, as the First Minister refuses to discuss these issues with me. He is far too grand to discuss them with an oik from a council estate in Greenock.
My hon. Friend is right on two counts. The Glasgow science centre—which I believe has been described in some quarters as a complete waste of money—is a magnificent addition to the city of Glasgow. It is an investment in science at exactly the time when that is what we need. I absolutely deplore the cut that he has mentioned, but I am convinced that the Commonwealth games will go ahead and that they will be a magnificent success.

Friend the Prime Minister may be aware of my early-day motion condemning the Scottish Executive's decision to slash funding for Glasgow science centre from £1.7 million to £1.08 million, which threatens its financial viability. Glasgow science centre is a unique facility that attracts thousands of visitors and has been awarded five-star status by Visit Scotland. Does he share the anger of my constituents and the people of Scotland who use this unique facility and call on the Scottish Executive to reverse this short-sighted decision?

My hon. Friend is absolutely right. He is asking a question about what affects the Glasgow people—that is, a 40 per cent. cut in funding to Glasgow science centre as a result of a decision by the SNP Administration. We have doubled science expenditure in this country and we are encouraging young people to visit science centres. It is unfortunate that funding in Glasgow has been cut as a result of the SNP's decision, and it will live to regret that.

Mr. Caborn: The Millennium Commission, rather than the Government, has provided £209 million of National Lottery funding for
Millennium projects in Scotland. £36.2 million has been awarded to the Glasgow Science Centre. The Glasgow Science Centre as
also been funded by public bodies under the Scottish Executive, which is responsible for Science Centre policy within Scotland.

Mr. Sarwar: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement about his recent visit to the National Science
Centre in Govan. [130954]
Dr. Reid: I visited Glasgow Science Centre on 7 June 2000 to launch the Health and Safety Strategy Statement demonstrating that the
Government and the Health and Safety Commission are determined to work together to revitalise health and safety in the UK. I very
much welcome the birth of the Glasgow Science Centre as an example of economic and cultural regeneration not only for Govan and for
Glasgow but also for Scotland. I hope that it will fulfil its potential of being a showcase for science and linking to other science
centres in Scotland and beyond. I am sure that the policy of recruiting locally will be welcomed by the local population. The centre
represents an investment of £75 million and will bring 120 new jobs.
