That this House notes 31st March 1996 will mark the tenth anniversary of the abolition of the Greater London Council; believes that abolition was an act of party political spite initiated by Margaret Thatcher and carried through without regard for the opinions and wishes of Londoners, some two thirds of whom opposed abolition and 10 years on would support the restoration of a strategic authority for London; looks forward to the election of a Labour Government pledged to restore a real voice for the capital in the form of city-wide governance; and calls for a vigorous debate on the subject involving all people genuinely interested in the standing and reputation of London in the world.
