Greenwich Hospital (GH) provides funding for bursaries for eligible children of Royal Navy personnel, which was ÂŁ1.02 million in 2021-22.
The Royal Hospital School (RHS) site was purpose built by GH in the 1930s and there is no charge for use of the land or buildings. GH also provides benefits to some RHS non-teaching staff via a legacy pension scheme.
The GH Annual Report and Accounts for 2021-22 were laid before Parliament on 23 October 2023, which set out relevant costs associated with the RHS, including details of pension schemes. RHS is not a separate legal entity to GH so the accounts show a consolidated view of income and expenditure, but the finances of each entity are managed separately.

The Director of Greenwich Hospital (DGH), appointed by the Secretary of State, is proprietor of the Royal Hospital School (RHS) and sits on the school's Board of Governors. Until formal governance can be modernised via legislation, the Greenwich Hospital Advisory Board including DGH, chaired by the Second Sea Lord, has established closer engagement with Governors and the RHS senior leadership team to ensure the effective delivery of education and Greenwich Hospital's objectives at the RHS.

Greenwich Hospital meets the needs of serving and former Royal Navy and Royal Marine (RN/RM) Service personnel and their families as set out in its founding Royal Charter through a variety of activities. These include the provision of sheltered housing and support to former RN/RM personnel; bursaries to receive education at the Royal Hospital School for children of RN/RM personnel; education bursaries to serving individuals, support for welfare projects and other recreational projects, and distribution of grants across the Navy charity sector.
