The Charity Commission is not subject to Ministerial or departmental direction or control. It is for the Charity Commission to decide whether to publish correspondence or statements about its work on specific regulatory cases. The Charity Commission does not usually publish statements about regulatory cases that are not statutory inquiries, unless there is significant public interest in doing so.

MHCLG officials have engaged with Hope Not Hate on various issues related to departmental policy interests, from incidents of unrest or community tensions, to hate crime and beyond.
Officials can and do access publicly available reports generated by Hope Not Hate, but do not routinely get access to such reports prior to public release, contribute to their development, or engage directly in other ways on the production of such reports.

All relevant meetings attended by ministers, special advisers and senior officials are declared in the normal way in the department’s quarterly transparency releases.
Departmental spending and grant allocations are also routinely disclosed, but I can confirm that no funding has been allocated to the organisation in question during the current financial year.

Charities can undertake campaigning, awareness-raising and non-party political activities that support them in delivering their charitable purpose. Charities are not permitted to undertake any party-political activity.
HOPE not Hate Limited is not a charity; it is therefore not subject to the restrictions on political activity that apply to charities and does not come under the Charity Commission’s jurisdiction.
HOPE not Hate Charitable Trust is a charity and therefore does come under the Charity Commission’s jurisdiction and cannot engage in partisan political activity. The Charity Commission does not have an open regulatory case on HOPE Not Hate Charitable Trust.

Some groups publicly demonstrate behaviours that oppose the values and principles that underpin our society. The Government is committed to tackling those who spread views that promote violence and hatred against individuals and communities in our society. This includes using existing mechanisms to analyse, prevent and disrupt the spread of ideologies that can lead to community division.
We assess all evidence of those that radicalise others though their support for or justification of violence and will not tolerate those who spread divisive and harmful narratives. We work with local, regional and national partners, including with policing, to reduce the impact of these groups in communities and limit their influence as a potential driver for radicalisation.
We continue to work with law enforcement agencies and multi-agency partners to increase our understanding of new and emerging radicalising threats to society. Any violent threat is assessed and managed by the police and security services based on the threat that it is deemed to pose.
The Home Office avoids publicly commenting on whether or not specific groups or individuals are of extremist concern, as this could have a detrimental effect on our ability to take future action against them.

Representatives from the Home Office have met with members of Hope Not Hate on a small number of occasions in the past year, as part of engagement with wider partners on asylum and migration and responding to protest activity.
The Home Office is free to decide who and which organisations it meets with as long as the organisation in question does not act unlawfully. Decisions on individual meetings are taken on a case-by-case basis.

That this House endorses the letter of support put together by the Hope Not Hate campaign expressing solidarity with, and for, Representative Rashida Tlaib, Representative Ilhan Omar, Representative Ayanna Pressley and Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez; condemns without equivocation the inflammatory, hurtful and racist comments from the President of the United States; expresses its solidarity with the democratically elected Members of Congress that the President of the United States targeted with his appalling comments; rededicates itself to standing up for tolerance, inclusion and diversity and pledges to fight bigotry and hatred wherever it finds it, at home and abroad; and reiterates the call and need for national parliaments and legislatures, across the world, to look like the communities they seek to serve.
