Mr. Gardiner: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if she will make a statement about the work of Indo UK
Partnerships and the Indo UK Round Table. [25573]
Nigel Griffiths: The UK's political and business relations with India, a key partner, are a very high priority for this Government.
My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister's visit confirms this. We are making good progress, helped by the Indo-British Partnership
for trade and investment and the UK/India Round Table for new thinking about our wider bilateral relations.
The Indo-British Partnership (IBP) was created in 1993 by the then Prime Minister to promote trade and investment. During his recent
visit to India my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister met the British and Indian co-chairs of the IBP. Since its inception, the IBP
has seen a substantial increase in bilateral trade. The UK is now India's second largest trading partner after the US. By the end of
2000 bilateral trade was worth £5 billion. That year UK exports to India grew by 32 per cent. The UK accounts for over 6 per cent.
of India's total foreign trade.
The UK/India Round Table, which meets again in April, was established in April 2000 by the two Foreign Ministers. It has produced a
series of constructive recommendations for enhancing bilateral relations.

Mr. Simon Hughes: To ask the President of the Board of Trade what plans she has to develop Britain's trading relationship with

Mrs. Beckett: I have already made clear my strong commitment to strengthening the Indo-British partnership. A major trade
exhibition--towards 2000--is being held in October this year at the time of the state visit of HM the Queen and HRH the Duke of
Edinburgh. I will be visiting India myself later in the year. A promotional campaign is also planned in the UK to raise awareness of
the opportunities in India among small to medium companies. I am confident that this activity will contribute significantly to
meeting the target of £5 billion that has been set for two-way trade by 2000.

Mr. Vaz: To ask the President of the Board of Trade what plans she has in respect of the indo-British Partnership Initiative. [715]
Mrs. Roche: The Indo-British Partnership has made a significant contribution to the strengthening of bilateral commercial links
between the UK and India since its formation in 1993. A number of high-profile events are planned over the coming months to mark the
50th anniversary of India's independence including a major "Indo-British Partnership: Towards 2000" exhibition which will take place
in Delhi in the Autumn at the time of the State Visit by HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. This will have a commercial
focus but will also highlight scientific, technological, cultural, sporting and other links. A programme of promotional events is
also planned in the UK later in the year involving Business Links, trade associations and Chambers of Commerce. I will be providing
every possible support for the Indo-British Partnership's future activities and hope personally to be associated with a number of
its events.

Mrs. Beckett: At present, I have no firm plans to lead a UK trade mission to India. Such a mission accompanied my predecessor to
India as recently as January 1997. I am, however, aware of the outstanding success of the Indo-British Partnership and will be
giving it my fullest support.
