To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of making additional funding available to support the work of the Institute of Cancer Research.
The Department funds research through the National Institute of Health and Care (NIHR). This includes investment through NIHR infrastructure, programmes, and the NIHR Academy. The Institute of Cancer Research receives funding through its participation in NIHR-funded research infrastructure, its involvement in NIHR-funded research, and through NIHR training and career development awards held by its researchers. For example, the Institute of Cancer Research is a partner in the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research, which receives over £32 million for the period 2022 to 2028 to support cancer research. The Government keeps the funding of all agencies and institutions under regular review.

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) receives funding from a range of public and charitable sources. This includes significant funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and from charities like the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and Breast Cancer Now. As part of this Government provides the ICR nearly £9 million in Charity Research Support funding (CRSF) as part of its Quality Related research funding. This is awarded in recognition of ICRs charitable research income in line with the treatment of other universities in receipt of charity research grants. CRSF may be used to improve the sustainability of charity research.
That this House welcomes the opening of the Male Cancer Research Centre at the Institute of Cancer Research, Europe's first centre for research into the causes and prevention of male cancers, especially prostate cancer; notes that prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and is responsible for 9,500 deaths each year; further notes that the disease is often regarded as a matter of embarrassment and silence, and that more research is urgently needed into both its causes and prevention; and calls upon the Government to increase public awareness of the benefits of early diagnosis, and to increase further financial support for research into male cancers.

That this House welcomes the launch of the 1999 Annual Research Report of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre formed between the Royal Marsden National Health Service Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research; recognises the tremendous developments in cancer research and the achievements in improving treatments and patient care which are increasing survival rates and delivering a better quality of life for cancer patients; hopes the first draft of the Human Genome Sequence and the expertise of dedicated scientists will help the centre fulfil its mission of relieving human suffering by pursuing excellence in the fight against cancer; and thanks all the staff for their commitment and hard work.
