The US are a close ally and we engage with them routinely on matters of national security. However this was a Gibraltar-led operation which the UK was asked to support in upholding what is a European sanctions regime. We are part of ongoing conversations with the US, with whom we have extensive cooperation on maritime security, and have had for years.
What conditions were given by Iran ahead of the release of the tanker Adrian Darya from Gibraltar, and how will the United Kingdom respond if and when it is shown Iran has breached those conditions?

We were given clear assurances that the oil and the tanker would not, in breach of sanctions, reach Syria and we expect those undertakings to be complied with. We want Iran to come in from the cold; the only way it can do that is by respecting the international rule of law, whether on freedom of navigation, the nuclear deal or indeed the treatment of our dual nationals.

The United Kingdom forwarded correspondence from the Government of Gibraltar that notified the EU Commission on 5th July 2019 of Government of Gibraltar action in respect of the Grace 1 on the 4th July 2019 pursuant to enforcement of EU Council Regulation 36/2012 (Syria). It is for Member States to determine and take necessary measures to implement and enforce EU sanctions. In this instance the decision to detain Grace 1 was taken by the Government of Gibraltar.

We are concerned by Iranian threats to disrupt shipping and are working hard to ensure ships are able to move freely and safely. The UK is focused on de-escalation and we continue to urge the Iranian authorities to reduce tensions. The former Foreign Secretary spoke to Foreign Minister Zarif on 13 July to discuss the importance of finding a resolution to the current situation. We have been clear that Gibraltar’s action, with UK assistance, to detain the Grace 1 tanker was to enforce EU Syria sanctions in Gibraltar’s territorial waters on the basis that the oil was being transported to a sanctioned Syrian entity. The investigations being conducted around the Grace 1 remain a matter for the Government of Gibraltar.

Since 4th July, the UK has made strenuous efforts to support the resolution of the Grace 1 issue, which remains subject to a legal process in Gibraltar. The former Foreign Secretary spoke to the Iranian Foreign Minister on 17 July with the aim of encouraging de-escalation. However, instead of responding constructively, Iran chose to seize the Stena Impero. The former Foreign Secretary made a statement to the House on 22 July, outlining actions the UK government is taking in response.
We are clear that under international law, Iran had no right to obstruct Stena Impero, let alone board her. This incident was a breach of the principle of free navigation on which the global trading system and the world economy ultimately depend. We urge Iran to release the Stena Impero and her crew.
