That this House congratulates Macmillan Cancer Relief on organising the world's biggest coffee morning on Friday 30th September; recognises that schools, businesses and community groups across the UK all held coffee mornings to form part of the world's biggest coffee morning; further recognises that Macmillan Cancer Relief, as with all cancer charities, is an extremely important charity and one which many people have come into contact with at some stage in their lives; and pays tribute to the organisers of the coffee morning who helped raise much needed funds which will be channelled into funding essential information and counselling centres, specialist Macmillan medical staff, buildings for cancer treatment and care, as well as grants for people with cancer who are in financial difficulty.

That this House welcomes the launch of Macmillan Cancer Relief's Better Deal Campaign to highlight the financial distress of many people with a cancer diagnosis; notes that more than three quarters of people surveyed said that they had run up extra bills during treatment; especially notes the unavoidable cumulative burden of the costs of travel to hospital and hospital car parking for regular treatment; and calls on the Government to work with Macmillan to review the help available to meet these costs to ensure that cancer patients do not have to worry about finding the money to attend their life saving treatment.

That this House congratulates Macmillan Cancer Relief on the successful launch of its exciting new Better Deal campaign to get a better deal for people dealing with cancer, especially from the benefits system; notes that three-quarters of people surveyed by Macmillan who have had a cancer diagnosis say they suffered financially as a result; further notes that for some people affected by cancer, money worries are second only to pain as a cause of stress; welcomes Macmillan's resolve to champion these issues and campaign with people struggling to meet the unexpected extra costs resulting from the debilitating effects of treatment, including travel to hospital, hospital car parking and higher heating bills; supports Macmillan's calls for the Government to ensure every cancer patient is offered specialist benefits advice at diagnosis and to change the law to improve cancer patients' access to disability living allowance (DLA) and attendance allowance (AA); and calls on the Government to stop cancer affecting people's finances and to act urgently to ensure the DLA and AA schemes are fast, fit for purpose and fair for people dealing with cancer.

That this House welcomes Macmillan Cancer Relief's Cancer Talk, an innovative educational initiative to counter common classroom myths and misconceptions about cancer; applauds the cross-party support that Macmillan Cancer Relief's Cancer Talk has secured from the many honourable Members who have kindly issued press releases, written to local schools and arranged media photocalls to highlight Cancer Talk Week from 4th to 8th March; notes that Cancer Talk is an ongoing education programme designed with great sensitivity and with advice from teachers, child psychiatrists and parents to tackle a very real problem, namely the danger that misconceptions compound ignorance, stigma and isolation for the millions of pupils and young people, teachers and parents affected by cancer; further notes that new MORI research shows that while two-thirds of children know somebody affected by cancer and nearly half have had a family member with cancer, ignorance abounds, underlining a real need for accurate information to raise awareness and understanding of cancer which four in 10 of each honourable Member's constitutents will develop in their lifetime, including childhood cancers affecting one in 600 of those aged under 15 years; welcomes the statements of support from the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Right honourable Estelle Morris MP, Gary Lineker, whose son had cancer, the S Club 7 pop group and actors from Grange Hill and Hollyoaks; and calls on all honourable Members to make a date in their diaries for next year's Cancer Talk Week in February 2003 and give their wholehearted support to this record-breaking initiative for which 4,000 schools have registered this year alone.

That this House congratulates Macmillan Cancer Relief on its powerful exhibitions in the Upper Waiting Hall during the week beginning 3rd December; supports Macmillan's important work to ensure that, right from the start, when cancer is first diagnosed, and throughout the experience, people affected by cancer have both the expert care and the practical and emotional support they really need; applauds the numerous innovative ways in which Macmillan seeks to realise this vision, including through more than 2,000 Macmillan nurses, over 300 Macmillan specialist consultants and doctors, CancerVOICES to ensure the cancer service user's voice is heard in service development; over ??5 million in patient grants to almost 20,000 people in 2000, with most cheques sent within three days of receipt of grant application; extensive information and support services, including an information line that helped 23,000 people in 2000; and a programme of building projects for the NHS that in 2000 alone totalled ??5.2 million; notes with concern that Macmillan and cancer patients are currently penalised for this unique charitable contribution to the tune of approximately ??1 million per annum in irrecoverable VAT; further notes with alarm that no action has yet been taken to address this unjust anomaly; appreciates the deep debt of gratitude Macmillan owes honourable Members from all parties for their kind support of Macmillan appeals and initiatives in their constituency and nationally; and calls on the Department of Health and Her Majesty's Treasury to agree at the earliest opportunity a just, joined-up and sustainable solution that will end Macmillan's ??1 million bill for irrecoverable VAT on building costs and release funds which could otherwise fund 30 additional Macmillan nurses.
