The Ministry of Defence (MOD) keeps its defensive posture in the region under constant review and decisions are made based on operational factors. The deployment of HMS Dragon is in addition to the considerable amount of capability positioned into RAF Akrotiri since January, including hundreds of armed forces personnel, radar, anti-air defence missiles and F35s to defend our bases, people and interests.
The MOD remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of security to safeguard our national defence capabilities.

To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the role of Tunisia in preventing movement across the Mediterranean of migrants seeking to reach Europe and potentially the United Kingdom.
The Government of Tunisia is facing a challenging situation with regards to irregular migration flows into and from the country. More than 95,000 people crossed the Mediterranean Sea from Tunisia to Italy in 2023. Efforts to prevent crossings are improving, despite the scale of the challenge and the resources necessary to effectively do this. To support these efforts, the UK is working with the relevant authorities, and is funding an assisted voluntary returns programme in Tunisia, alongside likeminded partners, to support the safe return of migrants from Tunisia to their countries of origin.

The Defence Safety Authority Service Inquiry into the loss of F-35B ZM152 is nearing completion and will be published as soon as practical.

The UK notes the abuse of migrants and refugees in Libya and the inhumane conditions in detention centres. The Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Libya is assessing human rights abuses and violations in detention centres. The UK co-sponsored the renewal of the Fact Finding Mission's mandate in July. We continue to urge the interim Government of National Unity to take steps to end the exploitation and abuse of migrants and to implement a better functioning system that respects human rights. We support the UN's call for detention centres across Libya to be closed, and call on all parties to engage with the UN and the humanitarian community so that all migrants and refugees can be evacuated safely in accordance with international human rights law.

Safety remains of paramount importance in all military flying, including operations from aircraft carriers. The Service Inquiry (SI) into the loss of F-35B ZM152 on 17 November 2021 is on-going, with an interim report into the likely cause of the accident published on 8 September 2022. The SI panel continue to work to identify any relevant lessons and will make recommendations to help prevent reoccurrence.
