To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether he plans to provide funding for the Birmingham Eastside metro extension through the Network North plan.
The Birmingham Eastside metro extension is the responsibility of the West Midlands Combined Authority, which will receive over £1bn extra funding as a result of Network North.

As part of Network North, the Government announced indicative funding allocations for the second round of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements covering 2027/28 - 2031/32. West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has an indicative allocation of £2.648 billion for this period, which includes an uplift worth over £1 billion.
CRSTS provides eligible mayoral combined authorities with considerable opportunities to deliver transformative local transport projects based on local priorities. West Midlands Combined Authority could choose to use CRSTS funding for mass transit in East Birmingham and Solihull.
The Department for Transport is in regular discussions with WMCA regarding delivery of their CRSTS programme.

The Department was made aware of the West Midland Metro closure on 19 March 2022. Since then we have been engaging with officials from the Combined Authority to understand the evolving operational issues. We have received assurances that ticket acceptance on alternate transport modes is in place for Birmingham residents. We continue to monitor the situation, communicating with officials from the region as well as industry safety experts, to understand its potential impact to the forthcoming Commonwealth Games and to understand when services can be resumed.

When a similar problem occurred in Sydney with the same type of trams, built by the same company, CAF, the trams were off the tracks for 18 months. With the Commonwealth games due to begin on 28 July next year—I am sure we all hope they will be a huge success—the west midlands obviously needs a full and efficient public transport service. Will the Minister keep tabs on this issue and offer whatever assistance he can to ensure that the problem does not adversely affect the games?

The Department for Transport was first made aware of safety issues regarding the tram vehicles in June 2021, but had not been informed of the impact it would have on services, (full service suspension), until 12 November 2021 when the issues re-emerged.
