That this House marks the 56th anniversary of the election of Salvador Allende as President of Chile on 4 September 1970; notes with concern evidence from declassified Foreign Office files that the UK Government conducted covert propaganda operations aimed at preventing his election in 1964 and 1970; condemns the military coup of 11 September 1973 which overthrew Chile’s democratically elected government and installed the Pinochet dictatorship; remembers those killed, disappeared, tortured and forced into exile under the Pinochet regime; regrets Britain’s role in undermining Chilean democracy and its subsequent relationship with the Pinochet regime; and calls on the Government to acknowledge Britain’s interference in Chile, release all remaining relevant records, and reaffirm its commitment to democracy, sovereignty and human rights in UK foreign policy.

The UK regularly raises the Myanmar crisis with China and other neighbouring countries, including at the UN Security Council (UNSC). Most recently, in December 2025, the UK convened a UNSC meeting, where we condemned military airstrikes against civilians. A summary is available on gov.uk at the link below:

UK sanctions include a comprehensive arms embargo on Myanmar, and our 19th round of sanctions in 2024 targeted companies involved in the procurement of aviation fuel and equipment to the Myanmar Armed Forces. As a long-standing policy, we do not speculate on further enforcement action, or comment on individual personnel.

The UK Government uses sanctions to achieve a range of foreign and security policy objectives. We consider designations under our sanctions regimes, including the Myanmar Sanctions Regulations, as guided by the evidence and the objectives of the sanctions regime. It would not be appropriate to speculate about future sanctions designations as to do so could reduce their impact.

The UK condemns the coup in Myanmar. In February, we announced our eighteenth round of sanctions, targeting the Myanmar Security Force's access to finance, arms and equipment. We consistently use our role as penholder at the United Nations Security Council to maintain pressure on the military, including leading the first ever Security Council Resolution on the Myanmar crisis in December 2022. Since the coup we have provided almost £150 million in life-saving humanitarian assistance, emergency healthcare, education and support to civil society and local communities.
