To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what progress her Department has made on the roll out of Project Gigabit in North East Somerset and Hanham constituency.
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what progress her Department has made on the roll out of Project Gigabit in North East Somerset and Hanham constituency.
Through a combination of the commercial market and government subsidised delivery, the government is making good progress towards our gigabit coverage target.
Based on Ofcom’s Connected Nations reporting for gigabit coverage in North East Somerset and Hanham, as of January 2026, 88% of premises had access to gigabit-capable broadband, which is up from 85% in July 2025, and is in line with the UK average.
Openreach is delivering further gigabit-capable coverage to over 1,100 premises within the constituency through Project Gigabit. The government will continue work with suppliers to cover the remaining premises in the North East Somerset and Hanham constituency which are not currently included in Project Gigabit or suppliers’ commercial delivery plans as far as possible, in line with the objective of achieving nationwide gigabit coverage by 2032.
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, if she will ensure that the 5,443 properties descoped from Project Gigabit in Mid Bedfordshire constituency in May 2026 are added to a future programme.
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, if she will ensure that the 5,443 properties descoped from Project Gigabit in Mid Bedfordshire constituency in May 2026 are added to a future programme.
As a result of the recent changes agreed by Building Digital UK (BDUK) and CityFibre, the earlier stages of the Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes contract will proceed as planned, and premises in the later stages will be removed from the contract. These changes aim to minimise the overlap with other suppliers’ commercial network plans and ensure best use of public funding.
Prior to the redesign, approximately 3,870 premises in Mid Bedfordshire constituency were included in this Project Gigabit contract. Approximately 2,100 premises remain in scope of this contract. Of the descoped premises, around 1,050 already have access to a gigabit-capable broadband connection or are included in future commercial delivery plans.
For the remaining 720 premises, BDUK is working with other suppliers to identify alternative solutions for premises which still require support as quickly as possible. A market engagement consultation for suppliers was published on 1 June to confirm supplier interest in relation to the premises that still need coverage in the affected areas.

This government is committed to achieving nationwide gigabit coverage by 2032, and 88% of UK premises are now able to access a gigabit connection.
Through Project Gigabit, we are rolling out lightning-fast, reliable broadband across the UK to premises not covered by existing or planned commercial coverage.
Since June 2024, Government funding has enabled over 332,000 premises to receive gigabit-capable broadband.
We have also seen the completion of the first three Project Gigabit contracts in Teesdale, North Dorset and Northumberland.

Approximately 4,650 premises in the Chichester constituency were included in the initial scope of the Project Gigabit contract for East and West Sussex, which is being delivered by CityFibre.
Building Digital UK (BDUK) and CityFibre have since agreed not to progress with the later stages of the contract which are not yet in delivery. This is due to commercial coverage extending further than suppliers had previously indicated, meaning fewer premises now require public subsidy and therefore, the contract was redesigned to minimise overlap with commercial plans and ensure best use of public money.
Following this decision, almost all premises in Chichester have been descoped from the contract. Of the descoped premises, approximately 1,760 already have access to a gigabit-capable broadband connection and around 400 are currently included in future commercial delivery plans.
As with other areas, BDUK is working to put in place alternative coverage solutions as soon as possible for the remaining premises which still require support. A market engagement consultation for suppliers was published on 1 June to confirm supplier interest in relation to the premises that still need coverage in the affected areas.

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of the closure of applications for Gigabit Broadband Vouchers in Cumbria on households in Carlisle constituency who do not have a fibre optic broadband connection.
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of the closure of applications for Gigabit Broadband Vouchers in Cumbria on households in Carlisle constituency who do not have a fibre optic broadband connection.
Based on Ofcom’s Connected Nations reporting for gigabit coverage in the constituency of Carlisle, as of January 2026, 91% of premises had access to gigabit-capable broadband, which is a significant increase from 69% in January 2024 and is above the UK gigabit coverage average of 88%. This has been assisted by Project Gigabit. Across Carlisle, over 4,750 premises have already received a gigabit-capable connection, with an additional 1,770 still expected to be given coverage, via the Project Gigabit contract covering Cumbria which is being delivered by Fibrus.
Through a combination of commercial market and government subsidised delivery, government is ensuring 99% of UK premises will have access to gigabit-capable broadband by 2032. In support of this, Building Digital UK (BDUK) is currently refreshing its delivery plans for the remaining premises not included in Project Gigabit or any commercial plans.
BDUK has asked all suppliers to confirm their interest in any further projects through the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, though delivery through this route is likely to be limited and BDUK expects most remaining coverage will be provided through Project Gigabit contracts.

This government is committed to achieving nationwide gigabit broadband coverage by 2032. We are making good progress on Project Gigabit, and as of the end of March 2026, over 1.4 million premises in hard-to-reach communities across the UK had been upgraded to gigabit-capable broadband through government-funded programmes.
Building Digital UK (BDUK) closely monitors contract performance through regular reporting and governance. Where suppliers are unable to proceed, BDUK acts swiftly to put alternative plans in place to ensure delivery continues wherever possible.
While delivery depends on technical feasibility and planning checks, Project Gigabit contracts provide strong safeguards and oversight to ensure suppliers progress delivery in line with agreed milestones.

This is due to commercial coverage extending further than suppliers had previously indicated, meaning fewer premises now require public subsidy and therefore, the contract was redesigned to minimise overlap with commercial plans and ensure best use of public money.
Following this decision, approximately 5,890 premises in Arundel and South Downs have been descoped from the contract. Of the descoped premises, approximately 850 already have access to a gigabit-capable broadband connection and around 890 are currently included in future commercial delivery plans.

Through a combination of commercial market and government subsidised delivery, government is ensuring 99% of UK premises will have access to gigabit-capable broadband by 2032.
Project Gigabit delivery across the East England region is primarily being taken forward through several Project Gigabit contracts, including those covering Suffolk, Norfolk and Bedfordshire, Northampton and Milton Keynes, alongside wider cross-regional interventions to reach remaining premises.
As a result of these Project Gigabit contracts, over 43,740 premises across the East England region have already received a gigabit-capable connection, with an additional 72,420 still expected to be given coverage. Across the county of Bedfordshire, over 5430 premises already have access to a gigabit-capable connection, with a further 1140 expected to receive a gigabit-capable connection via Project Gigabit contracts.
For the remaining premises which are not within the scope of suppliers’ commercial plans or existing Project Gigabit contracts, Building Digital UK (BDUK) is working to put in place further coverage solutions as soon as possible. A market engagement consultation for suppliers was published on 1 June to confirm supplier interest in relation to the premises that still need coverage in Bedfordshire and other areas of central, eastern and south-eastern England.

The change to the Project Gigabit contract with CityFibre for Hampshire will result in a reduction of 26,150 premises from the scope of the contract, of which approximately 3,450 are within the East Hampshire constituency. There will be a reduction of approximately £56.1 million in government funding through this contract as a result. Across all of CityFibre’s contracts within England the reduction in government funding will be approximately £420.6 million which will be redeployed into other Project Gigabit projects.
Many of the premises that have been removed from the scope of the CityFibre contracts will now gain gigabit coverage through commercially funded delivery without the need for public subsidy.
For the remaining premises which have been removed from CityFibre’s contracts and are not within the scope of suppliers’ commercial plans, Building Digital UK (BDUK) is working to put in place alternative coverage solutions as soon as possible through Project Gigabit. A market engagement consultation for suppliers was published on 1 June to confirm supplier interest in relation to the premises that still need coverage in the affected areas.

According to Ofcom’s Connected Nations reporting, as of January 2026, 81% of premises in Chichester have access to gigabit coverage, an increase from 72% in January 2025.
For the remaining premises within East and West Sussex that are not within the scope of suppliers’ commercial plans, including those in Chichester, BDUK is working to put in place coverage solutions as soon as possible through Project Gigabit, in line with the government’s commitment to achieve nationwide gigabit coverage by 2032. To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, following the announcement on 26 May 2026 regarding the cancellation of later-stage Project Gigabit contracts, how many premises in Hertfordshire will no longer be eligible to receive gigabit-capable broadband connectivity under that programme.
Building Digital UK (BDUK) and CityFibre have recently agreed changes to the scope of its Project Gigabit contracts to reflect updated commercial rollout plans and wider market conditions. Updated market data shows that a significant number of premises are now expected to receive gigabit-capable broadband through commercial rollout. These contracts have therefore been changed to minimise overlap and ensure best use of public funding.
As a result of these changes, approximately 1,700 premises in the Harpenden and Berkhamsted constituency have been removed from the later stages of CityFibre’s Project Gigabit contracts. Across Hertfordshire, approximately 5,140 premises have been removed from contracts.
As of September 2025, 200 of the premises removed from scope of the contracts in Harpenden and Berkhamsted, and 1,120 premises removed in Hertfordshire, had access to a gigabit-capable connection. BDUK will be publishing the outputs from the latest Open Market Review (OMR) on 4 June, which will update these figures as well as show the extent of further commercial plans.
For premises that remain outside suppliers’ commercial plans following these changes, BDUK is working to include them in alternative Project Gigabit interventions as soon as possible, in line with our commitment to achieving nationwide gigabit coverage by 2032.

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what assessment has been made of the progress of the roll out of Project Gigabit in South Shropshire constituency.
Through Project Gigabit, we are delivering gigabit-capable connections to premises not included in suppliers’ commercial delivery plans, predominately in rural areas.
We expect approximately 7,640 premises in South Shropshire constituency to benefit from gigabit coverage through Project Gigabit’s cross regional framework contract with Openreach.
Additionally, approximately 4,950 premises in South Shropshire constituency have received a gigabit-capable connection through the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, which is part of Project Gigabit.

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, whether address‑level coverage data will be published for the rollout of Project Gigabit Type C contracts in Caerfyrddin.
Building Digital UK publishes data providing premises-level information on the premises included in Project Gigabit contracts every four months. Approximately 5,600 premises in the Caerfyrddin constituency are currently included in the scope of Project Gigabit contracts being delivered by Openreach. These contracts are expected to complete by 2030.
On 13 March, we also launched the gigabit broadband availability checker on GOV.UK, which allows residents and businesses in England and Wales to see whether gigabit-capable broadband is available at, or planned for, their address, including through Project Gigabit.
While this data provides transparency on which premises are included in subsidised plans, Project Gigabit suppliers are responsible for determining local delivery schedules. Communities are therefore encouraged to register their details with suppliers to receive the latest updates as build progresses.
