To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what steps her Department is taking to support the participation of women and girls in sport in East Sussex.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what steps her Department is taking to support the participation of women and girls in sport in East Sussex.
The Government is committed to ensuring that as many women and girls as possible have access to and benefit from quality sport and physical activity opportunities.
The Government provides the majority of funding for grassroots sport through our arm’s -length body, Sport England, which invests over £250 million in Exchequer and Lottery funding each year to help people get active, including women and girls.
Sport England supports the work of the local Active Partnership which covers East Grinstead and Uckfield, Active Sussex, who champion physical activity with local leaders to develop interventions tailored to communities. Alongside this, Sport England invested £57,019 into sports-related projects in the constituency of East Grinstead and Uckfield in 2025/26.
In addition, Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign has also inspired millions of women and girls across the country to get active. 1.6 million more women are expected to be active as a result of the campaign by 2028.

My Lords, as someone who watches most proceedings in the House, albeit remotely, I personally pay tribute to the noble Lord, Lord Shipley, as he leaves the House, for his great service—and I mean great service—particularly in the handling of legislation. He will be surprised to know how often I...

I congratulate the noble Lord, Lord Shipley, on securing this debate on crucial issues. I wish him a long and happy retirement; like the rest of the House, I am grateful for all that he has done here.

My Lords, I agree strongly with the right reverend Prelate on community participation being fundamental to democracy.
I shall miss my noble friend Lord Shipley, but he is entirely right to retire. I am strongly in favour of retirement from this House as a principle, and I shall follow him next...
