There has been one occasion, on 12 December 2014, when RAF Leuchars has been used as a diversionary airfield for Typhoon aircraft since their re-deployment to RAF Lossiemouth. A total of seven Typhoons diverted. The runway at RAF Lossiemouth was temporarily unavailable as a Typhoon, which had suffered a minor technical issue and engaged the runway arrestor cable, needed to be recovered from the runway and the arrestor cable reset.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many Quick Reaction Alert flights from RAF Leuchars have required air-to-air refuelling in each of the last five years.
[154736]
The number of days on which air-to-air refuelling has been launched to support Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) aircraft from RAF Coningsby and RAF Leuchars was eight in 2012 and nine in 2013 to date. Information for earlier years is not held centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
Information relating to air-to-air refuelling for aircraft scrambled from RAF Leuchars is not provided separately. Deterrence is a principal function of QRA and QRA is in turn an integral part of the air defence of the UK. The disclosure of information that might compromise
the QRA deterrent capability, would, or would be likely to, prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of the armed forces.

The Regular Army Basing plan sets out the phased handover of RAF Leuchars to the Army, commencing in early 2015 with the arrival of a small number of advance Army elements.
As we prepare for the implementation phase of the Basing plan, further detailed work will be carried out to refine the infrastructure requirement. It is too early to
confirm the specific infrastructure items that will be delivered to accommodate Army units and associated personnel.
