Ministry of Defence officials have held discussions with British Cycling and agreed mutually beneficial parameters to enable the continued use of the BMX facilities at RAF Shawbury for at least 12-18 months.

The Government has committed to a multi-year investment of £344 million over the next cycle to support Olympic and Paralympic success, including over £38 million for cycling.
It is for National Governing Bodies such as British Cycling, to set out what it takes to win gold and how they target the investment they receive from the Government and National Lottery. British Cycling are working closely with RAF Shawbury to determine the parameters for this partnership going forward.

There will be a limited short-term impact to the number of trainees completing UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS) Rotary Wing aircrew training at RAF Shawbury this year.
However, this will not have an impact to the number of Tri-Service aircrew commencing Operational Conversion Unit training or on Front Line units. UKMFTS continues to deliver the number of Rotary Wing aircrew needed by Defence.

Due to commercial sensitivities, we cannot disclose the number of contracted civilian engineers based at RAF Shawbury.
There are a number of military engineers based at RAF Shawbury but they are not necessarily employed in direct engineering roles.

As at 1 January 2024, there were 620 UK Armed Forces Service personnel stationed at RAF Shawbury.
Please note, UK Forces Service Personnel comprises UK Regular Forces, Gurkhas, Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS), Locally Engaged Personnel , Volunteer Reserve, Serving Regular Reserve, Sponsored Reserve, and Full-Time Reserve Service (FTRS) of unknown origin. University Air Squadron Officer Cadets are excluded. The figure includes trained and untrained personnel.
The figure includes Reserve personnel and is therefore an estimate because the stationed location data for Reserves has not been fully verified.
The figure has been rounded to the nearest 10. However, numbers ending in "5" have been rounded to the nearest 20 to prevent systematic bias.

Engineers have attended the 10 homes with expired Gas Safety Certificates at least once, with the majority attended more than once, however, the contractor has been unable to gain access or confirm an appointment with all the families. It remains a top priority to gain access to these homes.
Appointments to complete the EICRs for the 156 occupied SFA at these sites have been made and should be carried out by the end of August 2023. A number of factors have led to the EICR backlog accumulating, for example, supply chain resource problems, and legislation has reduced the currency of existing electrical safety certificates from 10 years to five, increasing the frequency of the checks.
The safety of our personnel and their families is our highest priority. It is unacceptable for any family to be living in a home without the necessary checks.
