Defence will develop RAF Wyton as a modern, integrated intelligence hub through the upgrading and consolidation of purpose-built infrastructure, supporting the ambitions set out in the Strategic Defence Review and Defence Investment Plan as part of the wider modernisation of our Military Intelligence Services (MIS). The programme is intended to deliver modern, secure and more integrated facilities that enable personnel and capabilities to operate more effectively together, support the adoption of advanced digital, data and analytical capabilities, and improve collaboration across Defence and with partners.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) does not hold an option agreement with Crest Nicholson in relation to the surplus land at RAF Wyton. Instead, the MOD has a development management agreement with Crest Nicholson. This agreement supports the MOD’s promotion of the site for redevelopment by managing town planning, funding, and scheme implementation on behalf of the MOD.
The MOD will continue to hold discussions with Crest Nicholson as work on the project develops.

RAF Wyton is a key site for Cyber and Specialist Operations Command (CSOC) and UK Defence. Defence continues to invest in the site and is considering future options for RAF Wyton as a defence technology hub that could act as a catalyst for greater investment in the local area for associated industry and academia. This will be centred around the existing unique collaborative facility and reflects similar national and international technology hubs.

This will include a detailed options appraisal and analysis of the proposed move's business case, however at the present time the preferred option has not yet been identified.

Development proposals for new housing at Wyton Airfield are at an early stage and therefore no such assessments have yet been made. The Ministry of Defence and Homes England will work closely with relevant infrastructure providers as detailed proposals are developed.

Base security at RAF Wyton consists of professionally trained personnel from the Military Provost Guard Service, Ministry of Defence Guards and RAF Police, responsible for maintaining physical security across the site, and the Station works to reduce security risk to as low as reasonably possible. Service personnel are also held at readiness should the threat level be heightened, or a major incident declared. In addition to the sites well-guarded posture, it is encircled by a metal, razor wire topped, fence line which is patrolled. We also work closely with the local Cambridgeshire Constabulary and their Counter Terrorism Policing network. As the local MP, I know the team at RAF Wyton would welcome further visits from the hon. Gentleman.

It is not yet possible to identify an exact date for when development would start on site because the site is unallocated within the Local Plan and a planning application has not been submitted.
The site has potential capacity for 4,500 homes and the timeframe for delivery of these will be determined when the development and planning application come forward.

Wyton Airfield is dependent on delivering A141 road improvement works. These are currently at preparation of outline business case stage with a proposed date for publication of November 2025.
Following renewed engagement on the project as part of the new taskforce to support the release of surplus public sector land for housing, My Department is not aware of other project specific infrastructure requirements.

It is not yet possible to indicate the exact number of new homes that will be delivered at Wyton Airfield.
Huntingdonshire District Council are in the process of updating its Local Plan and the Wyton Airfield site has been submitted through the ‘call for sites’ with an indicative capacity of 4,500 homes.
Any proposals for new housing will be the subject of planning applications in due course.

In March, the government established a new taskforce to support the release of surplus public sector land for housing.
Unused land will be identified, developed, and released by a cross-government collaboration, which will focus on getting it back into productive use as quickly as possible by removing barriers that have prevented houses coming forward at pace on vacant public land for too long.
This ambitious new partnership approach will explore new delivery models, establish collaborative agreements between the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Homes England, Network Rail and other government bodies, bring in the private sector – ultimately getting spades in the ground sooner to deliver homes faster, making the dream of homeownership a reality for many.
The early MOD sites selected as a focus for acceleration include Deverell Barracks in Ripon, Chetwynd Barracks in Nottinghamshire and Wyton Airfield in Cambridgeshire. All of these sites have significant potential for new homes.

As part of the ‘Better Defence Estate Strategy’, the UK Strategic Command Station at RAF Wyton will gain an enhanced integrated operations hub, designed to directly support UK Armed Forces on operations globally. This initiative will also enable the release of our site at Feltham in Middlesex, resulting in regeneration and supporting the Government’s commitment to building 1.5 million homes. No recent assessments of the potential merits of the disposal of land at RAF Wyton have been undertaken.
