The number of grants for Research and Development given by Regional Development Agencies in each of the last five years is set out in the following tables.There were a large number of research and development grant issued during theperiod and information on the value of each individual grant, which is not held centrally, can be obtained only at disproportionate costs.My Department does not set the RDA budgets for research and development as RDAs have been given flexibility to use their single budgets on the key regional priorities identified by their Boards. The amounts each RDA has spent in total on research and development is shown in the following tables.

Mr. Barry Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what estimate he has made of the total sums received as a result of assisted area status for (i) the former area of Alyn and Deeside District Council, (ii) the former Clwyd County Council and (iii) the current Flintshire County Council since the status was conferred; and if he will make a statement. [78955] Mr. Hain: The Assisted Area is designated for the purpose of allocating aid to industry. The beneficiaries of that aid are companies seeking financial assistance toward investment projects which will create or safeguard employment in that area. All, or parts, of these authorities have been included in the Assisted Area since 1972. In that time a wide range of assistance, including grant aid, has been provided to companies by the Welsh Office, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Welsh Development Agency, the Development Board for Rural Wales, the Wales Tourist Board, the Training and Enterprise Councils, local authorities and other business development organisations. Information on all of these is not held centrally. Mr. Luff: To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he has yet considered the business plans of the English regional development organisations; and what level of financial support he proposes to offer for 1997-98. [21558] Mr. Greg Knight: I have studied the current performance and future plans of the existing eight English regional development organisations. I am pleased to say that they continue to make a significant contribution to the work of my Department's Invest in Britain Bureau, and to the overall success of the United Kingdom in attracting inward investment and in particular to their region's performance. I have also had detailed proposals for the establishment of new regional development organisations in the east and south-east of England. Taking all this into account I have today offered a total of £10,47 million in grants for the inward investment promotion activities of the existing regional development organisations for 1997-98 and to establish the two new ones in the east and south-east who are being offered grants of £505,000 each. This represents an 18 per cent. increase in total RDO grants to enable the UK to remain competitive in promoting its locational advantages in the fact of increasing competition for mobile inward investment projects. I have allocated the grant aid as follows: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Grant is offered on an annual basis according to past performance, ability to absorb additional funding effectively, and for an agreed programme of future activities, with proper regard to value for money. It is Government policy to encourage direct inward investment to the UK because it contributes significantly to economic growth. Inward investment brings benefits both to the country as a whole and more specifically to the assisted areas. The creation of new regional development organisations in the east and south-east of England completes the coverage of the UK map with such organisations and will greatly assist our efforts to attract inward investment.
