The UK and Ireland work closely together on shared security challenges under the refreshed UK-Ireland Defence Memorandum of Understanding which prioritises cooperation in the air, cyber, and maritime domains. However, the UK is not responsible for defending the airspace of Ireland. Matters relating to the defence of Ireland remain for the Irish authorities, and any enquiries on those issues should be directed to them.

To ask His Majesty's Government what checks are being conducted at the borders between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland to prevent the entry into the UK of unauthorised migrants.
To ask His Majesty's Government what checks are being conducted at the borders between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland to prevent the entry into the UK of unauthorised migrants.
As part of the Common Travel Area (CTA) arrangements, the UK does not operate routine immigration controls on journeys from Ireland to the UK, with no immigration checks being undertaken on the Northern Ireland-Ireland land border. The UK does however operate intelligence-led operational activity on CTA routes – away from the land border. This is to detect those who intend to abuse CTA arrangements. Anyone identified attempting to circumvent UK border controls is liable to be detained and, if they are not lawfully present within the UK, removed.
In support of this the UK and Ireland have a close and collaborative working relationship on a range of issues, including migration and border security. A key focus of that collaboration is our shared commitment to protect the CTA from abuse while preserving the rights of British and Irish citizens. Discussions are ongoing, including through the Common Travel Area Forum (CTAF), an official-level forum co-chaired by the UK Home Office and Ireland's Department of Justice.
The Government does not routinely publish details of these discussions or any measures under consideration. However, where appropriate, information on joint activity or agreed measures may be announced publicly.

To ask His Majesty's Government, further to the Written Answer by the Economic Secretary to the Treasury on 15 April (HC123696), what types of EU cohesion spending will the UK's payments be allocated to; and whether any spending will be allocated to Northern Ireland/Ireland programmes.

As set out in the answer of 15 April, the UK is not currently contributing to EU Cohesion Funds as a consequence of the UK/EU reset. Whilst the EU is seeking to establish a mechanism for a UK financial contribution towards reducing economic and social disparities between the regions of the Union as part of participation in the Internal Electricity Market, any UK financial contribution would be subject to negotiations with the EU, and no contributions have yet been made or agreed upon.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what steps he is taking to ensure cross border policing is effectively maintained across Northern Ireland and Ireland's border.
The Government remains committed to maintaining effective cross-border policing and security cooperation between Northern Ireland and Ireland. It holds regular discussions with the Irish Government on a range of issues, including cross-border security. Policing and Justice are devolved in Northern Ireland and a matter for the Northern Ireland Department of Justice. There is a strong and well-established culture of collaboration between the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and An Garda Síochána (AGS).

To ask His Majesty's Government how many asylum seekers have been removed from Northern Ireland in the past three years; whether the Government possess confirmations of their departure from the United Kingdom and return to another state; and how many such returns were made to the Republic of Ireland.
The Home Office does not routinely produce statistics showing from where in the UK a failed asylum seeker has been removed. A transparency publication updated on 19 August (Northern Ireland enforcement activity between 1 October 2022 and 31 May 2026 - GOV.UK) shows that between 1 July 2024 and 31 May 2026, Immigration Enforcement conducted 2,913 enforcement visits in Northern Ireland resulting in 2,425 arrests, with nearly 1,000 (963) people subsequently returned, almost 500 (493) of which had a destination of Ireland. These numbers are not however specific to asylum seekers and include both asylum-related and non-asylum encounters.
The latest official statics on returns published on 27 August (How many people are returned from the UK? - GOV.UK) show that in 2025 there were 521 returns (enforced and voluntary) to Ireland (table Ret_D02 of the ‘returns detailed datasets’). These figures are from across the UK however and are not specific to Northern Ireland encounters.
Obtaining the specific information you have requested would involve collating and verifying information from multiple systems owned by multiple teams across the Home Office and, therefore, could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

The UK Government is acutely aware of the importance of the UK-Ireland relationship. Since taking office, the Secretary of State has continued to build on the reset in relations. In August, he travelled to Dublin to meet with Irish Government counterparts, and held bilateral discussions with Minister McEntee at the recent British Irish Association conference in Oxford.

As part of the Common Travel Area (CTA) arrangements, the UK does not operate routine immigration controls of individuals arriving in the UK by air or sea from within the CTA, and no immigration checks are undertaken at the Ireland-Northern Ireland land border.
There is a high level of cooperation on migration and border security between the UK and Ireland to identify and tackle migration trends as they emerge. As per the commitment made at the 2026 UK-Ireland Summit, between the previous Prime Minister and the Taoiseach, the UK and Ireland continue to work together, which includes expanding immigration data sharing.
