To ask the hon. Member for Battersea, representing the Church Commissioners, what recent engagement the Church of England has had with the Roman Catholic Church of England and Wales.
The relationship with the Roman Catholic Church is warm and one that has grown closer in recent decades, exemplified by the reciprocal attendance by both Archbishops at each other's Instillation in Westminster and Canterbury, followed by the pilgrimage to Rome of the Archbishop of Canterbury which included meetings and prayer with His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, reaffirming a shared commitment to Christian unity.
Within England the Church continues to engage regularly with the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales on areas of shared interest, while local clergy and parishes also work closely together with all denominations as part of Churches Together to support local ecumenical activity. Another example of the warm relations between the two communities can be found in the common witness during September 2025 where bishops and clergy of both Churches in Liverpool joined together for a service and pilgrimage walk between the two cathedrals. Dialogue between the two Churches also continues regularly through the meeting of the English and Welsh Anglican Roman Catholic dialogue group.
That this House congratulates the Right Reverend Francis Dougan as Bishop of Galloway on his ordination to the Episcopate in a very moving and joyful ceremony at the Church of Saint Peter-in-Chains, Ardrossan, on 9 March 2024; is aware that Bishop Dougan, originally from Lanark, received his priestly ordination on 27 June 2001 and was incardinated in the diocese of Motherwell; understands that Bishop Dougan will succeed Archbishop William Nolan who served as the Bishop of Galloway from 2015 to 2022 before assuming the position of Archbishop of Glasgow; recognises that Bishop Dougan was ordained by the Most Reverend Leo Cushley, Metropolitan Archbishop of Saint Andrews & Edinburgh; notes that the role will see Bishop Dougan become the ecclesiastical head of the Diocese of Galloway which covers the local authority areas of Dumfries and Galloway, South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and mainland North Ayrshire and Cumbrae; acknowledges that upon his ordination Bishop Dougan proclaimed the need for a Church where everyone can feel at home and welcomed and expressed his commitment to continue to build on the solid foundations left by those who have come before us, stretching back to St Ninian who first planted the seeds of the Christian faith in Galloway; and wishes Bishop Dougan all the best in his endeavours in his new role which he will tackle with gusto and good humour.

We welcome the Catholic Church's focus on cultural, environmental, economic and social issues in the Amazon, and will consider the outcome of the Synod with interest. The UK is working with Brazil to help ensure it continues to protect the Amazon and has invested nearly £120 million through the International Climate Fund on projects to limit deforestation, prevent forest fires and implement the Forestry Code in the Amazon, Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes.
We are also committed to promoting and defending the human rights of all individuals and regularly participate in discussions regarding human rights in various United Nations fora, including the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council.

To ask Her Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to support the peace process in Nicaragua; and what assessment they have made of the role of the (1) Catholic Church, (2) Organization of American States, and (3) Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
To ask Her Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to support the peace process in Nicaragua; and what assessment they have made of the role of the (1) Catholic Church, (2) Organization of American States, and (3) Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
The UK remains deeply concerned by the situation in Nicaragua.
We welcome the role the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua has played in convening the national dialogue and urge the Church to continue its efforts to resolve the current crisis.
The dialogue needs to address both the issue of justice for victims of repression and human rights abuses, and the need for electoral reform. We welcomed the agreement between the Organisation of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Nicaraguan Government to establish an international Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI, in Spanish) to investigate human rights abuses. The GIEI must be allowed to work freely to ensure all those responsible for human rights abuses and acts of repression are held to account.

As Minister for Faith I meet with members of the Catholic hierarchy in the course of my work. In March 2017 I met the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols. In November 2016 I visited St John's Cathedral in Portsmouth, in March 2017 St Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle upon Tyne and, in July 2017, the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral to learn about the excellent work these cathedrals do to support their communities.
I plan to visit more Catholic places of worship in the coming year. The Government wholeheartedly supports the invaluable work being done by people around the country who are inspired by their faith and we are making sure that the voices of people of faith are heard in Government, as is appropriate.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what plans she has to (a) amend or (b) remove the 50 per cent faith-based cap on admissions to Catholic schools.
The ‘Schools that work for everyone’ consultation document recognised that some faiths, including the Catholic Church, have felt unable to open new free schools subject to the 50% cap because they say it contravenes religious rules.
The department plans to respond on this in due course. We greatly value the important role Catholic schools play in our education system and that will continue.
