Government has not made any such assessment. The Government was elected on a manifesto which included a commitment to continue to support the First Past the Post voting system.
The Government believes that the First Past the Post system is a robust and secure way of electing representatives, that is well understood by voters, and provides for strong and clear local accountability. It ensures a clear link between elected representatives and constituents in a manner that other voting systems may not.
To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made, if any, of plans by the Welsh Government to allow councils to adopt the Single Transferable Vote system for local government elections; and whether they intend to introduce such powers for English councils.

The Government does not intend to introduce such powers for English councils. This Government has made a commitment to continue to support the First Past the Post system of voting on a national and local level.

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, whether his Department has made an assessment of the potential merits of changing the electoral system for local government elections in England to the single transferrable vote system; and if he will make a statement.

The Government’s view is that the First Past the Post system is well-established for local government elections in England. The current system provides a clear and well-understood link between the electorate and the council.
The Government committed in its manifesto to extend the First Past the Post system to mayoral and Police and Crime Commissioner elections, and has no plans to change the current arrangements for local government elections.
