Defra has frequent engagement with key horticulture stakeholders including berry growers on the range of matters impacting the horticulture sector. Additionally, through the National Drought Group, ministers engage specifically with the National Farmers' Union and Horticulture Trades Association to assess drought impacts and to coordinate action across all sectors, helping to inform planning, response and resilience measures. This engagement informed the Government’s package of support for farmers affected by drought, announced in August.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what recent conversations she has had with the British Berry Growers Association about the challenges faced by British Berry Growers.
Defra Ministers and officials engage regularly with a range of horticultural stakeholders, including the British Berry Growers association, to discuss opportunities and challenges facing the sector, including through the Horticulture Environment and Growth Group, of which they are a member, and which provides an important forum for engagement between government and industry on matters affecting horticultural businesses.
The Government is also working with industry, on a Horticulture Sector Growth Plan aiming to grow the sector’s profit. These are sector-led, using sector expertise to create evidence-based plans setting out a clear vision for growth and a practical pathway to deliver it.
That this House notes with sadness the passing of William Berry of Newport-on-Tay, who died peacefully at Tayfield on 25 June 2025, aged 85; extends heartfelt condolences to his wife Elizabeth, his children, grandchildren and all who knew and loved him; recognises his lifetime of service to the local community, including his contributions as Deputy Lieutenant of Fife; further notes his dedication to public and civic life in North East Fife; and pays tribute to his legacy as a devoted family man and respected figure whose memory will be cherished by many in Newport-on-Tay and beyond.

To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the use of nanomaterials to extend the life of soft fruit.
Defra and the Food Standards Agency are aware of the potential for nanotechnology to be used to extend the shelf life of soft fruit. This area is covered by EU legislation. Nanotechnology products must be authorised before they can be used in or on food, or in food packaging. The authorisation process includes a comprehensive safety evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). To date, no nanotechnology products for direct application to soft fruit have been authorised in the EU and none are currently being considered for authorisation.

Defra engages regularly with key bodies in the agriculture and horticulture sector to explore seasonal labour. In September, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister met representatives from industry at Defra’s Seasonal Workforce Working Group to discuss the best practice for attracting and retaining workers and this included representatives from the soft fruit industry.
We are also directly engaging with industry through 2018 agricultural shows. Most recently the Secretary of State attended the Royal Highland Show. He spoke about various issues, including the labour needs of both skilled and unskilled workers across the UK.
