Appointments to the Board of the Tate are made by the Prime Minister. These appointments are regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments and vacancies are advertised on the Public Appointments digital service, where candidates can submit applications. Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Governance Code on Public Appointments. A full-term reappointment and three nine-month extensions for Trustees were announced on 05 June 2026 to ensure continuity on the Board.

On 2 October, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced a value for money audit of all equality, diversity and inclusion expenditure in the Civil Service. The audit will dovetail with the public sector productivity review, aiming to deliver a leaner, more efficient Government. The audit forms part of our drive to improve productivity across the public sector by driving down waste and improving performance. The findings and actions of the audit will be announced by the Chancellor in the autumn.

The Government have provided, I think, £1.5 billion to help the cultural sector, so they have provided a lot of taxpayers’ support. I am sorry to say, though, that, if people are on strike, they are, by definition, not hard-working.

That is an excellent proposal. I have already visited the Tate since becoming a Minister, and I am well aware of the huge amount of work that it and other museums and galleries do to ensure that their collections are available around the country and to support other parts of the country as well as London.

Major national cultural institutions such as the Tate should put their brands as well as the art in their collections behind efforts to support regional and local art galleries and museums. Will the Minister therefore encourage the Tate to support proposals for pop-up Tate galleries at art galleries such as Harrow Arts Centre, which serves my constituents?

Tate Group is an arm’s length body of the department, and as such has operational independence from government, including on matters of pay. Whilst I am therefore aware of discussions relating to the 2018 pay award and the ballots of PSC and Prospect members, neither I nor my officials are taking an active role in discussions with Tate management or staff on the matter.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the wider implications of the decisions by the National Portrait Gallery and Tate to forgo the intended donations from the Sackler Trust.

My Lords, the DCMS-sponsored museums operate independently, at arm’s length from government. Therefore, decisions on philanthropic giving and other donations are a matter for the trustees of the respective institutions. Individual sponsored museums and galleries operate their own procedures relating to propriety and ethics, fundraising and charitable objectives.
