To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord McNally on 27 January (WA 186), whether Michelle and Lisa Taylor were compensated under the discretionary scheme which was abolished in 2006 or under another scheme or procedure; and, if they were not compensated, why not.
That this House congratulates the Court of Appeal for quashing the wrongful conviction of Michelle and Lisa Taylor for the murder of Alison Shaughnessy and pays tribute to the courage and tenacity of the Taylor family and the skill of their legal team in their campaign to obtain justice; is deeply disturbed that two young women were imprisoned for a crime they did not commit and that whoever did carry out the brutal murder of Alison Shaughnessy is still at large; and calls upon the Home Secretary in consultation with the law officers and the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to undertake the most rigorous inquiry into the extremely serious faults in the case, as described by the Appeal Court judges, as a matter of urgency and to reach agreement with the Taylor family's legal advisers as rapidly as possible with regard to the most suitable compensation, although this can never reflect adequately the stress, trauma and wasted time that this latest failure of the British judicial system has caused them.
