To ask Her Majesty's Government, following the publication of the Telecoms Diversification Taskforce Report on 20 April, whether the taskforce now been disbanded; and if not, what role and responsibilities the Taskforce now has.
The Telecoms Diversification Taskforce has completed its work and submitted its independent recommendations to the Government in April. The Taskforce will now transition to become the permanent Telecoms Supply Chain Diversification Advisory Council with Simon Blagden CBE as the new chair; as announced in the Government’s response to the recommendations published on 2 July. Many of the Taskforce members will continue to provide advice as part of the Advisory Council.
The Advisory Council will play a key role in overseeing and offering scrutiny to the delivery of the 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy. We will also draw on the expertise of the Advisory Council for wider telecoms supply chain diversification issues beyond the RAN (Radio Access Network).
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, how much funding will be provided to the Telecommunications Diversification Taskforce in the current Parliament.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, how much funding will be provided to the Telecommunications Diversification Taskforce in the current Parliament.
The Telecoms Diversification Taskforce, composed of independent experts from industry and academia, was established on a voluntary basis to look at where the Government should target measures to ensure effective, accelerated and sustainable diversification. No funding has been or will be provided to the Telecommunications Diversification Taskforce.
The Taskforce’s findings and recommendations were published on 20 April on GOV.UK. We will respond to the Taskforce findings in the summer, and outline our next steps on the delivery of the diversification strategy, which is backed by an initial investment of up to £250 million.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, pursuant to the Answer of 18 May 2021 to Question 1058, whether funding for the NEC NeutrORAN trial will be provided by the Diversification Task Force.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, pursuant to the Answer of 18 May 2021 to Question 1058, whether funding for the NEC NeutrORAN trial will be provided by the Diversification Task Force.
The Government announced its support for the NEC NeutrORAN trial in the 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy last November. The project was funded as part of the Government’s successful, long-standing 5G Testbeds and Trials programme. The project is progressing at pace, and is expected to deliver live 5G Open RAN within the UK in 2021.
The Telecoms Diversification Taskforce was established as an independent advisory group to help guide the Government’s design of targeted interventions to deliver the diversification strategy. All funding decisions remain with Government, as part of a wider programme of delivering on our long-term vision for a competitive, open and resilient supply chain.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what progress the Telecoms Diversification Taskforce has made on delivering its remit to date; and which UK regions have benefitted from investment through that Taskforce.

The Telecoms Diversification Taskforce was established to look at where the Government should target measures to ensure effective, accelerated and sustainable diversification. The Taskforceâs findings and recommendations were published on 20 April on GOV.UK and we are currently in the process of developing targeted measures to deliver our strategy, guided by these recommendations.
We will respond to the Taskforce findings, and outline our next steps on diversification in the summer. This will include outlining how we will use the initial investment, of up to £250 million, to deliver our key priorities and maximise benefits across the UK.
We remain committed to supporting UK suppliers, investing in R&D initiatives across the supply chain, and championing the exciting research underway in UK universities and regional advanced technology hubs. In Wales, for example, the Government is providing funding for the NEC NeutrORAN trial. The trial will establish a testbed for a multi-operator, neutral host solution in outdoor rural and urban environments, whilst using Open virtualised Radio Access Network (RAN) principles.
I wish to inform the House that the Government has today published its 5G Diversification Strategy, which sets out the Government’s approach to building a resilient, open and sustainable 5G supply chain.
