To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps her Department is taking to evaluate the effectiveness of trade missions dedicated to British agriculture.
This Government is supporting British food and farming’s untapped global potential through new trade agreements, including with India, and progressing negotiations with the EU on an SPS Agreement to make agrifood trade with our biggest market cheaper and easier.
In 2025 our global network of agri-food attachés resolved further export barriers which industry estimate are worth over £125 million. Recent successes include securing market access for dairy to Egypt, worth £35 million per year, and pork exports to Mexico, worth £3.8 million per year.
Dedicated trade missions support this work, helping farmers and growers get British produce into new markets overseas and unlocking export barriers.

There were seven Government-led trade missions between January 2017 and March 2023 to Gujarat.

The most recent trade mission in which representatives from the English language teaching (ELT) sector were invited and attended was to Malaysia from 20-23 February 2023.
The projected number of students participating in the English language teaching sector for 2023 - 2025 is 385,000 per year [Source: English UK).
We work closely with English UK, who are members of the Education Sector Advisory Group, co-chaired by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Department for Education ministers. We have provided support for English UK’s English with Confidence campaign, including through the production of promotional material and hosting around 50 overseas ELT agents during a familiarisation visit in September 2022. We will continue to ensure that the ELT sector’s recovery and ambition is captured in the Government’s International Education Strategy. DBT will be supporting English UK’s Study World event and will support the sector at ICEF (International Consultants for Education and Fairs) Berlin, alongside considering ELT mission destinations for the next 15 months.

The Department for International Trade has 131 Trade Missions currently planned over the next six months. Businesses are identified through Trade Associations and our UK-wide business networks.

Whilst my Department does not hold a central list of all historic missions from UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) as well as DIT, on reviewing available data, we estimate that over the last five years DIT and its predecessor UKTI have delivered in excess of 500 formal overseas trade missions to more than 80 countries. The figure may well be higher, as my Department operates in 108 countries globally, and not all facilitated visits are formally recorded as trade missions.
