Delivery Phase 4 (DP4) is the latest phase of the Dreadnought programme. It will enable the first-in-class submarine, Dreadnought, to complete her build, sea trials, and certification, ahead of entering service in the early 2030s. During this phase, the second boat will progress to sea trials, while the third and fourth boats will achieve key construction milestones.
Of the £8.4 billion allocated to DP4, £5.9 billion has been committed to BAE Systems through a contract signed in July 2026. Further contracts will also be placed with the wider submarine production supply chain during the DP4 period.

The Dreadnought Class submarines will begin to enter service from the early 2030s. The planned in-service dates for Royal Navy submarines are withheld as disclosure would, or would be likely to, prejudice the capability, effectiveness, or security of the Armed Forces.

This will allow us to meet the Government’s commitment to start to define the requirement for the post-Dreadnought strategic deterrent within this Parliament.

The 2015 National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence and Security Review, under the previous government, estimated that to build four Dreadnought submarines, the likely cost would be £41 billion. The current forecast to completion remains within that estimate.
