To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what recent assessment he has made of the potential contribution of wave power to the UK's renewable energy mix; and what steps his department is taking to support its deployment.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what recent assessment he has made of the potential contribution of wave power to the UK's renewable energy mix; and what steps his department is taking to support its deployment.
The Carbon Trust estimates the UK’s total wave resource to be around 230 TWh/year, with an exploitable resource of 40–50 TWh/year. However, wave energy is not yet commercially viable. The Government monitors progress closely and supports innovation through research funding programmes operated by UK Research and Innovation. As set out in the Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, emerging technologies may have a role to play in the longer term, subject to cost reduction, performance improvement and demonstrated scalability.
I thank the Secretary of State for the recent decision on the small modular reactor at Wylfa. To stay committed to the goals of the Paris agreement, we need to speed up the roll-out of technologies such as marine energy. Ynys Môn is home to the world-leading, community-owned Morlais tidal...

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, whether his Department will consider setting a £7m wave energy ringfence in Allocation Round 7 of the Contracts for Difference mechanism.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, whether his Department will consider setting a £7m wave energy ringfence in Allocation Round 7 of the Contracts for Difference mechanism.
Allocation Round 7 (AR7) budget details will be published shortly, before the bidding window opens.
Any decisions regarding the AR7 budget, including any minima, maxima or ringfences, are based on a wide range of factors, including an assessment of the pipeline of projects that could participate in the auction. The budget is set to help support effective competition in the CfD auction with the aim of delivering low carbon electricity deployment at low-cost to the consumer and supporting investment in emerging technologies.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of replicating the Wave Energy Scotland model across the UK.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of replicating the Wave Energy Scotland model across the UK.
The department has not undertaken a formal assessment of the potential merits of replicating the Wave Energy Scotland (WES) model across the UK. WES primarily utilizes a competitive pre-commercial procurement (PCP) model to drive innovation and development in the wave energy sector.
However, the Government has provided innovative support for wave energy though a suite of a suite of research funding programmes, operated both by DESNZ centrally, and, by UK Research and Innovation, including competitive funding schemes programmes such as the Energy Entrepreneurs Fund.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, how much innovation funding has the (a) tidal stream and (b) wave energy sectors received since 2020.

Tidal stream and wave technology projects are eligible to apply for a suite of innovation funding programmes delivered by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
Through UKRI, several such projects have won support through programmes administered by Research and Innovation organisations, including Innovate UK and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.
Detailed information on amounts of funding awarded to research and innovation projects is publicly available and can be found on the UKRI website:

The UK possesses tremendous tidal resource which could play a role in balancing the intermittency of wind and solar generation as we transition towards a carbon-neutral power sector.
Tidal stream is a home-grown industry of considerable promise, and the UK remains the world leader in tidal stream generation technologies. With around half of the world's operational deployment, the UK is on track to have over 130 MW of tidal stream capacity deployed by 2029.
Wave energy technologies have promise and the Government is closely monitoring the strides being made by the sector.
I won’t. Hopefully, it was not the upcoming speeches from me and the shadow Minister that drove her from Chamber. In any event, it is a delight to be here.

I do not know whether the Minister will touch on the Crown Estate, so I am taking the opportunity now. On the point about electricity demand doubling, there is such potential in areas such as Wales and Cornwall, if it so wishes. The concept that the Crown Estate should be...

Does the right hon. Gentleman agree that the Government need to give leadership and clarity to the tidal sector, including by explaining whether the criteria for well developed tidal range proposals published by the last Government are being taken forward by the current Government, so that projects like the Wyre...

I do agree. I suspect that I do not have as much expertise as the hon. Lady in tidal barrage—or whatever we are calling it these days. Most of the interest I have developed over the years is in tidal stream, but there is never going to be a single...

I have quickly written this speech while others were speaking, so if it is a bit general, it will be because of haste. I have just read it twice, and I thank the Lord I should be able to decipher my writing.
