That this House commends the team behind Effi o Blaenau, a Welsh-language drama film by filmmaker Marc Evans that has been screened at the Glasgow Film Festival and recently had its UK-wide release to huge critical acclaim; notes that the film has become the most successful Welsh-language film ever released in the UK, breaking box office records on its opening weekend; further notes that the film is an adaptation of the 2015 one-woman play Iphigenia in Splott by Welsh dramatist Gary Owen and follows a young woman from Blaenau Ffestiniog whose life is changed forever after a chance encounter; highlights the film’s powerful and unflinching depiction of the impact of austerity in communities; acknowledges that the film’s success demonstrates the strength of creative talent in Wales and the growing appetite for stories rooted in Wales; and congratulates the cast and crew for this important cultural milestone for Welsh-language film.

To ask His Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to provide education and training in Welsh at Berwyn Prison for inmates whose first language is Welsh.
To ask His Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to provide education and training in Welsh at Berwyn Prison for inmates whose first language is Welsh.
All learners at HMP Berwyn are entitled to access their education through the medium of Welsh should they choose to do so and are asked their language preference on arrival at the prison, and during their education induction. Although take up is historically low, this is facilitated through translated course materials, opportunities to complete assessments in Welsh, and classroom support provided by Welsh speaking staff working within the Education team. Welsh language courses are available to all prisoners on request, alongside a bilingual course on Welsh traditions and customs.
To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, what assessment she has made of the level of the funding gap between the BBC, ALBA and S4C; and whether she plans to take steps to address disparities in long-term funding security between Gaelic and Welsh language broadcasting.

The Government recognises the valuable contribution that providers of minority language broadcasting have in our society and the preservation of our national heritage.
The Media Act 2024 makes clear in legislation the importance of programmes broadcast in the UK’s indigenous and minority languages - including Scottish Gaelic - by including it in the modernised public service remit for television in the UK.
The Public Service Broadcasters, as well as MG ALBA, are operationally and editorially independent from Government, and specific decisions regarding content are a matter for them. MG ALBA committed in its 2024/25 annual plan to explicitly consider international reach and opportunities.
The Government launched the BBC Charter Review last year, which will consider how the BBC can best support minority language broadcasting, including Welsh and Scottish Gaelic. The Green paper also sets out that we are considering what further obligations the BBC should have to ensure a broad range of public service content is promoted within the BBC’s own platforms.
On funding, we will consider options for providing MG ALBA with more certainty over its partnership arrangements with the BBC and its funding as part of the Charter Review.
