To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to the Defence Investment Plan, published on 30 June 2026, page 26, how much he has budgeted for investment in weapons and sensor payloads for underwater drones as part of AUKUS Pillar 2.
The AUKUS Pillar II Signature Project on cutting-edge payloads and enabling systems for uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) will be funded from within the £1.3 billion investment to accelerate the Royal Navy's use of autonomous and uncrewed systems, and £1.2 billion investment in wider Underwater Warfare, set out in the Defence Investment Plan. It builds on the existing funding lines from the Anti-Submarine Warfare Spearhead programme, and wider funding for Maritime Combat Systems.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what the expected rollout date is for the 12 next-generation of SSN-AUKUS (SSN-A) nuclear powered conventional attack submarines.
As set out in the Defence Investment Plan, we will procure up to 12 next-generation SSN-AUKUS nuclear powered, conventionally armed attack submarines.
On current plans, we will cut steel on the first SSN-AUKUS submarine
next year, with the aim to deliver the first UK submarine into service in the 2030s.
I hope the Hon Gentleman will understand that the planned in-service dates for Royal Navy submarines are withheld as disclosure would, or would be likely to, prejudice the capability, effectiveness, or security of the Armed Forces.

As announced at the latest AUKUS Defence Ministerial Meeting, we are investing in the first Pillar 2 Signature Project on cutting-edge payloads and enabling systems for uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs). This will be funded from within the £1.3 billion investment to accelerate the Royal Navy's use of autonomous and uncrewed systems, and £1.2 billion investment in wider Underwater Warfare set out in the Defence Investment Plan.
This builds on our investment of over £3.8 million into the AUKUS innovation challenges, and the funding of existing AUKUS Pillar 2 workstreams, which is through various budgets across defence.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to the Defence Investment Plan, published on 30 June 2026, page 30, by when will he make a decision on the size of the SSN-AUKUS class.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to the Defence Investment Plan, published on 30 June 2026, page 30, by when will he make a decision on the size of the SSN-AUKUS class.
As set out in the Defence Investment Plan (DIP), we will procure up to 12 SSN-AUKUS submarines. A decision on exact hull numbers does not need to be taken at this stage.
The programme is currently midway through the Detailed Design and Long Lead (D2L2) phase and we anticipate that the number of submarines will be confirmed before the end of this phase in 2028.
Through the DIP, the Government has made the investments necessary to establish the industrial capacity required to ultimately deliver a submarine every 18 months from the mid-2030s to ensure we can deliver an expanded SSN force.

AUKUS is a unique strategic partnership which is fundamental to security and stability in the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic, as well as to the UK’s NATO-first approach and Trans-Atlantic burden-sharing.
The government has made a landmark £6 billion investment in the UK Submarine Industrial Base to drive forward an 18-month submarine production drumbeat and grow our nuclear-powered, conventionally-armed submarine fleet to up to twelve. The successful deployment of HMS Anson to Western Australia and completion of the Submarine Maintenance Period (SMP) in February 2026 was further demonstration of the UK’s commitment to delivery. Additionally, the Defence Ministerial Meeting in May 2026 announced the first Signature Project under AUKUS Pillar II: cutting-edge payloads and enabling systems for AUKUS partners’ Uncrewed Undersea Vehicles (UUVs).
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many times he has held meetings on the AUKUS programme since 5 July 2024.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many times he has held meetings on the AUKUS programme since 5 July 2024.
The Government is clear that AUKUS is a unique strategic partnership that is fundamental to the strength of our collective deterrence in both the Indo-Pacific and the Euro-Atlantic. The Defence Secretary is committed to delivering against our AUKUS commitments and ensuring the long-term success of the partnership.

My Lords, this is clearly a very delayed and extremely underfunded plan. As we have heard, at £15 billion it falls well short of the £28 billion requested by the defence chief to keep our country secure. But we know that it actually falls even shorter than that, as nearly...

My Lords, all European countries are struggling with coming to terms with new realities and what that requires for their defence and equipment to be appropriate to modern warfare.
