The UK firmly supports the documentation and investigation of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Syria. We remain concerned about allegations around forced abduction, and we have consistently emphasised to the Syrian Government that civilians must be protected from violence, and those responsible held to account. Over half of UK humanitarian programming in Syria was focussed on women and girls in FY 2024/25 with 271,000 women reached with VAWG-related support.
On the international stage, during the UK's UN Security Council Presidency in February, we focused on the rights of women and girls, delivering a joint statement calling for women's full, equal and meaningful participation and an end to discriminatory Assad-era laws. The UK continues to engage with both the Government of Syria and civil society to press for a genuine political transition that protects the rights of all Syrians, including women.

The Government takes International Parental Child Abduction (IPCA) extremely seriously, as set out in the Westminster Hall debate on 28 April 2026, and we make regular representations to the relevant authorities overseas to encourage compliance with their obligations under the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, including in Latin America. Enforcement of the 1980 Hague Convention ultimately rests with the courts and authorities in the country where the child is located. We publish information and guidance for families affected by IPCA on GOV.UK.

Since my statement to the House on 27 November 2025 (HWCS1105), we have continued to raise the importance of Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) with the Nigerian authorities on a regular basis.
The Special Envoy for FoRB, David Smith MP, visited Nigeria in May, where he met with Nigerian Government figures including the National Security Advisor and Minister of Information to discuss promoting interreligious dialogue and tackling the causes of insecurity.
In April, the Minister of State for International Development and Africa, Baroness Chapman, attended the opening of the Nigeria Peace Summit, bringing together senior Muslim and Christian leaders to support Nigerian-led approaches to reducing intercommunal violence.
And earlier this month, Baroness Chapman visited Kaduna State to see how UK support is helping to address insecurity and protect communities of all faiths and beliefs.
