The White Ensign is flown from the vertical flag pole on Admiralty Arch, on dates associated with royal occasions, and from the horizontal flag poles, on the official celebration of Her Majesty's birthday and for state visits in London.
It is a matter for individual government departments whether to fly other flags, in accordance with established protocol, in addition to the union flag. Departments
have the freedom to fly the union flag on their buildings all year round in addition to the designated fixed flag flying days.

The preferred bidder at Admiralty Arch has entered an agreement for lease, whereby the long lease will be granted once the bidder has received a planning consent for a scheme approved by government, as well as satisfactory funding.
The long lease, when granted. provides for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to erect and fly such flags as any of Her Majesty's Secretaries of State see fit in their absolute discretion from time to time provided that the size of the flags and the extent of the obstruction of the windows does not exceed agreed parameters.

The Cabinet Office is seeking an alternative use of Admiralty Arch due to the difficulty of providing modern, cost-effective and flexible office space within the constraints of a grade 1 listed building that is not currently suitable for office use. To that end a process to grant a long lease is currently under way. The principal objectives are to protect and reinstate the building’s heritage and to enable greater public access than has been the case for the decades it has been in use as a government office, as well as achieving best value for money and addressing security considerations. The Government intend to retain the freehold of the building in perpetuity for the nation.
