To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the use of artificial intelligence to support astronomical research and the analysis of data from scientific observatories.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the use of artificial intelligence to support astronomical research and the analysis of data from scientific observatories.
The government is supporting the development and deployment of pioneering machine learning and AI solutions for astronomical research, including the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Intelligent Observatory programme and AI in Radio Astronomy Workshop.
New international research infrastructures like the Square Kilometre Array Observatory, headquartered in the UK, are expected to generate very large volumes of astronomical data, creating opportunities for AI-enabled approaches, while AI will also take on a foundational role in next-generation cosmological simulations of the universe. The UK also supports other major research infrastructures, such as CERN, where the use of advanced digital and AI-enabled approaches for science has been pioneered for decades.
In the autumn, the Government Office for Science is due to publish work on AI for Scientific Breakthroughs, which includes astronomical research as one of its ten high impact scientific opportunities for leveraging AI in the next decade.

The Government is investing a record £86 billion in R&D between 2026/27 and 2029/30, with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) delivering £38.6 billion across the UK. UKRI’s “applicant-led” budgets will increase from £737 million this year to £815 million in 2026/27 and £866 million in 2029/30.
The Government recognises the central role that physics plays in driving economic growth, underpinning emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum and semiconductors, nuclear fusion and many others as well as sustaining the UK’s long-term scientific and industrial capability.
DSIT has asked UKRI to ensure that its final allocations are informed by consultation with the research community, as well as robust assessment of potential impacts on the UK’s scientific capability. Physics is well funded and there have been big increases for quantum and nuclear. The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), which is part of UKRI, is currently working with the sector to model different spending scenarios for its specific portfolio in particle physics, astronomy and nuclear (PPAN). No final spending decisions relating to STFC’s PPAN portfolio have been made, and the impacts of different modelled scenarios will be considered alongside feedback from the sector before taking any final decisions.
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, which government departments and agencies are responsible for (a) civil contingency planning, (b) warning and (c) mitigation in relation to (i) Near-Earth Objects and (ii) space debris.
To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, which government departments and agencies are responsible for (a) civil contingency planning, (b) warning and (c) mitigation in relation to (i) Near-Earth Objects and (ii) space debris.
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is responsible for civil contingency planning, warning and mitigation in relation to Near-Earth Objects and space debris.
Risks associated with these events are considered as part of the national risk assessment process and proportionate mitigation activity identified. Risks are published in the National Risk Register.
Contingency planning and event warnings are delivered through the UK Space Agency (UKSA) and the National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC).
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what quality assurance measures her Department has undertaken to ensure that Global University Systems is fit to retain the university titles and degree-awarding powers of the University of Law and Arden University since their recent takeover.
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what quality assurance measures her Department has undertaken to ensure that Global University Systems is fit to retain the university titles and degree-awarding powers of the University of Law and Arden University since their recent takeover.
Providers must meet clear criteria in order to obtain degree awarding powers or University Title, including demonstrating that they are delivering high quality higher education. As set out in published guidance[1], if there is a change in circumstances of a provider – such as a change of ownership –their eligibility is reviewed to ensure that these robust criteria are still being met. Providers need to demonstrate that they continue to be the same institution that was assessed for and granted degree awarding powers, and that they can still meet all University Title criteria.
Such reviews have taken place following the changes of ownership at the University of Law and Arden University.

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what steps his Department is taking to ensure that the outcome of the EU referendum does not have an adverse effect on funding for collaboration by and recruitment of astrophysicists.

The UK will maintain its status as a global centre for research and innovation. In last year’s Spending Review the Government committed to protecting science resource funding in real terms from its 2015-16 level of £4.7 billion a year for the rest of the parliament, as well as committing to invest in new scientific infrastructure on a record scale – £6.9 billion over the period 2015-2021.
While the UK remains a member of the EU, funding and collaboration arrangements continue unchanged. Researchers can continue to bid for competitive EU research funding such as Horizon 2020 while we remain a member of the EU. The Government will work with the Commission to ensure payment when funds are awarded. The Treasury will underwrite the payment of such awards, even when specific projects continue beyond the UK’s departure from the EU. This commitment will provide reassurance and stability to the research community, and recruitment should continue as normal.
